It was a real pleasure to welcome Shelby back into the studio for our second shoot together. Working with someone for a second time is always valuable, especially when they are still relatively new to modelling, because it gives me the chance to see how much they have grown in confidence and how much more settled they feel in front of the camera.
This session was a collaborative model portfolio shoot at my studio near Rendlesham in Suffolk. Shelby came in with a clear idea of the sort of mood she wanted, describing it as having a Devil Wears Prada feel. That gave us a strong visual direction from the start. I did not want it to feel like a costume interpretation of that world, but more a nod to its polish, confidence, structure, and fashion-led attitude. The result was a set of studio portraits that felt varied, intentional, and useful for a developing portfolio.
Working with Shelby for a Second Time
One of the best things about a second shoot is that there is already some trust in place. The first session usually involves getting to know how somebody moves, how they respond to direction, and where their confidence naturally sits. By the second shoot, that foundation is there, and it allows the work to move forward more naturally.
That was very much the case with Shelby. She was a joy to work with, just as she was the first time, but this session had a stronger sense of confidence running through it. She settled into the shoot well, responded thoughtfully to direction, and gave me a good range of expressions and body language across the different looks. When I work with new models, that development is something I genuinely enjoy seeing. It is rewarding to watch somebody become more aware of what they can do in front of the camera and more comfortable in their own space.
Why I Enjoy Working with New Models
I have always enjoyed working with people who are newer to modelling. There is something very honest about that stage. They are learning, building confidence, and figuring out how they want to present themselves. A shoot like this is not just about creating a few strong images. It is also about helping someone understand how posture, expression, movement, styling, and eye line can completely change the feel of a photograph.
That process matters. A good model portfolio should show more than one expression or one pose repeated in different outfits. It should suggest range, adaptability, and a growing sense of confidence. With Shelby, I could see that progress happening during the session. The more we worked, the more self-assured she became, and that naturally fed into the final images.
The Creative Direction Behind the Shoot
Shelby told me she wanted the session to carry a Devil Wears Prada vibe, and I thought that was a very useful creative reference. It immediately suggested something fashion-conscious, composed, and slightly editorial. That gave us a thread to work through the shoot, particularly in the styling, the chair work, the use of a book as a prop, and the stronger, more self-possessed expressions.
At the same time, I still wanted the images to be practical for a model portfolio. That is always important to me. It is very easy to make something overly themed, but for portfolio work I think there needs to be a balance between visual personality and usefulness. The images need to have style, but they also need to show the person clearly and honestly.
That balance worked well here. Some frames feel clean and contemporary, others lean more into fashion portraiture, and a few have a slightly sharper editorial edge. Together, they give a fuller picture of Shelby and where she is heading as she develops her portfolio.
Styling, Expression and Range in the Final Images
What I liked about this session was the variety we were able to achieve while still keeping the set coherent. The white and denim looks gave us something stripped back and modern. Those images feel quite clean, with the focus staying on shape, stance, and expression. They are useful portfolio images because they show Shelby clearly, without too much distraction.
The red styling took things somewhere more assertive. The red tights, heels, oversized tailoring, and seated poses all pushed the shoot further into that fashion-led territory we had discussed. These frames feel bolder and more graphic, and they gave the session a stronger editorial flavour.
The polka dot dress introduced another shift in mood. It softened the feel slightly, while still keeping a sense of style and purpose. The closer portraits from that look brought more attention to expression, movement, and the shape of the face, which helped round out the gallery.
That mix is important in model portfolio photography. It is useful to have clean frames, stronger fashion images, seated portraits, full-length work, and tighter crops that show expression. Together, those elements help build a portfolio that feels more complete and more credible.
Why I Always Welcome Chaperones
Shelby came to the studio with a chaperone, and I always see that as a positive thing. In fact, I genuinely like having chaperones present, particularly when I am photographing younger models or people who are newer to being in front of the camera.
A good chaperone helps create a calmer and more relaxed environment. For the model, it means they have somebody familiar there, which often helps nerves settle much more quickly. For me, it reinforces the professional and respectful atmosphere that I think every shoot should have from the very beginning.
I have never understood the idea that a chaperone is somehow a difficulty or an inconvenience. Quite the opposite. If a photographer is working properly and communicating clearly, having another person present should not be a problem at all. It often makes the shoot feel more comfortable for everyone involved. I would always rather somebody feels safe, supported, and able to relax than feel they have to navigate a new experience on their own.
Why Model Safety Matters
Whenever I work with a younger model, I feel it is important to say clearly that safety should always come first. A good shoot should feel professional, respectful, and well-structured from the very beginning, not just once the camera is out. In the UK, that means taking the time to check who you are working with, looking at previous work, reading reviews or references where possible, and making sure the details of the shoot are clear in advance.
That includes understanding whether the session is paid or collaborative, how the images may be used, and what the expectations are on both sides. Good communication before a shoot matters. It gives everyone clarity, and it helps build trust in the right way.
I have always believed that a model should feel completely comfortable bringing a chaperone, particularly for a first shoot, and I see that as a positive thing rather than a problem. A trusted person in the room can help everyone feel more relaxed and supported. It is also important that shoots take place in appropriate settings, such as a professional studio or an agreed public location, rather than somewhere that feels isolated or uncertain.
Most of all, I think people should trust their instincts. If something feels off, overly pressured, or unclear, it is perfectly reasonable to step away. Good photographers will always respect boundaries, welcome open communication, and understand that trust is earned, not assumed.
My Approach in the Studio
From a photographic point of view, I kept the session clean and controlled so the focus stayed firmly on Shelby, the styling, and the shifts in mood between each look. For model portfolio work, I generally prefer a lighting approach that feels polished and flattering without becoming too heavy or overly dramatic unless there is a strong reason for it.
The neutral studio background worked well for this session because it kept everything consistent across the different outfits and allowed the stronger elements, particularly the red styling, to stand out properly. Simplicity in the set is often a strength in studio portrait photography. It stops the frame from becoming cluttered and keeps the attention where it should be.
Direction is also a key part of sessions like this. I do not expect newer models to arrive knowing exactly what to do with every pose, hand position, angle, or expression. Part of my role is to guide them calmly and clearly so they feel supported rather than self-conscious. That guidance is not about forcing someone into something artificial. It is about helping them understand how to work with the camera more confidently and with more intention.
Why Shoots Like This Matter for a Portfolio
For a developing model, collaborative sessions like this can do far more than simply add photographs to a gallery. They can help mark progress. They can show how somebody is developing in confidence, how they respond to direction, and how they begin to understand their own strengths in front of the camera.
That is one of the reasons I enjoy this type of work so much. It is not only about the final images. It is also about the process that gets you there. With Shelby, I could see that growth happening throughout the session. Because this was our second time working together, there was already a level of familiarity in place, and that helped us move through the shoot with more ease and more confidence.
The final set reflects that. There is softness in some images, more attitude in others, and a stronger editorial edge in the boldest frames. That variation is useful in a portfolio because it shows that a model is not limited to one expression or one visual lane.

This was a really enjoyable second shoot with Shelby, and it was good to see how much she had developed in a relatively short space of time. She brought a clear visual idea into the session, worked well throughout, and grew into the shoot in a very natural way.
For me, it was also a reminder of why I value model portfolio photography so highly. It is not just about polished studio portraits. It is about trust, communication, careful direction, and creating a professional environment where somebody can build confidence safely and properly.
When that happens, the final images tend to carry more than surface style. They begin to show presence, and that is when a portfolio starts to become genuinely useful.
