Creating portfolio imagery that balances strength, style, and authenticity is always a rewarding challenge. This studio session with Michelle and Dexter did exactly that. Both brought different kinds of energy to the shoot, but the results are consistent: bold, expressive portraits that feel grounded and intentional.
Studio-Based, Strength-Focused
Shot at my studio at Bentwaters, the setup stayed simple: neutral backgrounds, clean directional lighting, and space to move. The aim was to create a strong foundation of portfolio imagery for both models, blending fitness-inspired poses with striking portrait work. Michelle and Dexter each brought their own look and experience, and the contrast between them, Michelle’s expressive dynamism and Dexter’s grounded stillness, made the shoot visually rich and fluid to direct.
Michelle: Expressive, Versatile, and Newly in Front of the Lens
Michelle (or Shell, as she often signs off) has a long-standing background in the industry, but it’s usually been behind the scenes as a professional hair and makeup artist. With experience spanning editorial, commercial, and bridal work, she knows what makes an image sing. Recently, she stepped in front of the lens herself, and it’s easy to see why others encouraged her to make that leap. She’s instinctively aware of shape, light, and form. Every pose had clarity, but also character, an awareness of how gesture and gaze can carry a frame. We explored static portraiture, expressive movement, and physical postures that drew from her athleticism and flexibility. She’s also open. Open to ideas, to risk, to trying something unfamiliar. Whether she was holding a deep yoga plank or crouched in a stylised fashion pose on brown seamless paper, she stayed fully present. Her friends call her the “female Rik Mayall” for her expressive face and offbeat humour. I absolutely see it. Her personality gives her images real spark.

Dexter: Steady, Disciplined, and Built for This
Dexter’s new to modelling, but you wouldn’t guess it. He’s got that rare quality of being still and powerful at the same time. With a background in the armed forces, he carries himself with physical confidence and calm purpose, something that really came through in the more sculptural, strength-led shots. His physique is strong and defined, but more importantly, he knows how to hold a pose without overthinking it. We worked through a mix of classic fitness imagery, flexing, neutral stances, and mid-movement bodyweight holds, as well as portraiture with a commercial edge. His focus throughout was unwavering. There’s no ego, no performance for the sake of it. He listens, takes direction, and executes. Whether he was paired with Michelle for duo shots or working solo, the results were consistent: professional, striking, and honest.

Visual Highlights from the Session
Here’s a preview of what we captured:
- Clean, minimal fitness portraits on grey and brown backdrops
- Expressive movement-based poses showing flexibility and control
- Bold duo compositions with strong body language and complementary energy
- Close-cropped portraits with slick hair, defined lighting, and confident expressions
- Playful and characterful shots that hint at each model’s personality without over-staging
These images were designed to be versatile for use across modelling portfolios, agency submissions, and social promotion. The session also allowed us to shift between moodier, sculptural work and brighter commercial looks, giving Michelle and Dexter plenty of material to build from.
Behind the Scenes: What Makes a Fitness Portfolio Shoot Work?
Good fitness photography isn’t just about muscle definition. It’s about presence, energy, and the ability to hold a frame that feels alive. Lighting and angles matter, but so does the connection between photographer and model. With Michelle and Dexter, we built that trust quickly. Both brought their full selves to the shoot, which makes all the difference. Props were minimal. Expression and form did the heavy lifting. The studio environment was kept focused, with plenty of short breaks to review images and adapt the pacing.
Final Thoughts
Working with Michelle and Dexter was a reminder that great model portfolio work doesn’t rely on gimmicks. If the light is right, the poses are grounded, and the connection is real, you don’t need much else. These are two individuals at different stages in their modelling journeys. One just starting out, the other transitioning from makeup to modelling. But both shared a willingness to show up, be seen, and work with the camera rather than just perform for it. I’ll be keeping an eye on where they go next.
