When a young artist steps into the studio for the first time, it’s always a privilege to be the one behind the lens. Eliza Gold is a 17-year-old folk-pop singer-songwriter from Suffolk who’s already making waves on the local music scene. We recently worked together on a full studio branding and portrait session, her first proper shoot of this kind, and I wanted to share both the experience and why this type of session matters so much for emerging musicians.
First Time in the Studio
This was Eliza’s first time in a professional studio, and while she was a little nervous at the start, she quickly settled into it. Abi, her mum, came along as her chaperone. Having a chaperone makes a world of difference, especially when someone’s still building their confidence in front of the camera. Abi gave encouragement, made sure Eliza felt comfortable throughout, and even helped with small adjustments that kept the shoot flowing. Chaperones are not just about safeguarding; they’re part of the support system that helps a session feel relaxed and enjoyable. With that reassurance in place, Eliza started to enjoy herself, and that shift in comfort translated clearly into the images.
Creating Eliza’s Visual Identity
Eliza already has a strong sense of who she is musically. Her songwriting blends poetic realism with catchy folk-pop hooks. There are notes of Joni Mitchell and Lily Allen in her lyrics, sharp, reflective, and often a little cheeky. That kind of voice needs visuals that feel authentic, expressive, and versatile. We focused on two core looks for the shoot:
- A soft pink blouse and denim shorts for a folksy, carefree tone.
- A darker, edgier look with a denim top and lace mini skirt that gave more attitude, something fitting for stage posters and press features. She wore baby blue cowboy boots in both setups, which added personality and a subtle Americana vibe, tying in nicely with her acoustic guitar and folk-influenced sound. The props and setting were kept minimal: a textured red drape, wooden chairs, and palm fronds to add depth without distraction. Lighting was clean and directional, drawing attention to expression and detail, especially in the close-up portraits.
The Importance of Branding Photography for Musicians
If you’re a young musician (or a parent of one), here’s why branding photography like this isn’t just a luxury. It’s an essential step in developing a professional image.
1. First Impressions Matter
Before a note is ever heard, people see a photo. It could be on a gig poster, a social feed, or an online playlist. If the imagery feels inconsistent or amateurish, it can hurt the artist’s credibility. But with professional photos, the message is clear: this artist takes their craft seriously. Eliza’s final images now form the backbone of her press kit and social presence. They show who she is, stylish, youthful, creative, before anyone even hits play.
2. A Strong Visual Style Builds Recognition
Visual identity is key to growing an audience. People remember what they see. Whether it’s the warm tones of Eliza’s portrait, the playful boots, or her relaxed expression with the guitar, these photos all say “Eliza Gold” loud and clear. This kind of consistency across photos helps build familiarity over time. When a fan sees a new single drop on Spotify or a poster appear at a local café, they’ll know it’s her without needing to read the name.
3. Social Media Is Visual First
Even if the music is great, you won’t get far on platforms like Instagram or TikTok without strong visuals. Artist profiles on Spotify and Apple Music also rely on a sharp profile and banner image. Eliza’s social accounts now have a bank of photos to rotate and repurpose. It’s not just about the occasional post, it’s about having a clear, recognisable brand across every platform. 4. Professional Photos Open Doors in PR and Media
Every press outlet and playlist curator wants usable, high-res imagery that fits editorial standards. When young musicians don’t have that ready, they risk missing out on features, playlist placements, or gig opportunities. Eliza now has photos that work in portrait, square, and landscape formats, suitable for use in articles, interviews, and blog features. She’s ready with everything a music editor might ask for.
5. Event Listings and Gig Posters Need Great Images
It’s one thing to land a gig, but to sell it, you need the visuals. Event organisers, especially for festivals, prefer artists who come with professional assets. It saves them time and helps them market the show effectively. Eliza’s updated promotional materials will be used across her upcoming gigs, including:
- Banham Barrel – 9 July
- Bures Music Festival – 12 July
- Stow Carnival – 18/19 July
- Roydon Soundwaves – 16 August
- Smoke House – 29 August
- Grange Farm – 30 August Catch her live if you get the chance. You can also find her music on Spotify.
6. Good Photos Reflect Professional Intent
Investing in a professional shoot sends a message. I’m serious about this. For a young artist like Eliza, it shows commitment and vision. It also helps agents, collaborators, and bookers take them seriously. These are the kinds of images that artists use again and again, for years, across different projects and stages of their career.
7. Visual Archives Future-Proof an Artist’s Career
Artists evolve. Styles change. Branding updates. But having a solid visual archive is invaluable. It becomes part of the artist’s history, a record of where they started and how far they’ve come. Eliza now has images that can be used for her current EP promotion and others that will still hold up when she’s touring further afield or releasing an album in the future.
What Makes Branding Photography Different?
This shoot with Eliza wasn’t just a portrait session. It was branding photography, designed with strategy, intention, and identity in mind. Here’s what sets this type of work apart:
It’s About Storytelling
Every image was planned to say something, from the choice of jewellery and boots to the way Eliza held her guitar. Whether the message is “folk dreamer” or “confident performer,” each photo supports that narrative.
It’s Cohesive and Versatile
Branding photography aims to deliver a full suite of usable content. Not just one standout shot, but multiple images that feel consistent, whether they’re used on a website banner or a YouTube thumbnail.
It Reflects Who You Are
Good branding photography doesn’t impose a look. It finds the real personality and brings it forward. In Eliza’s case, that meant embracing her natural charm and musical tone while pushing into new stylistic territory she hadn’t explored before.
From Studio to Stage
Photographing Eliza was a reminder of how important these sessions can be, not just for the images, but for the confidence they build. She arrived with a guitar and a little hesitation. She left with a full set of press-ready photos, a stronger sense of how to present herself, and some genuine excitement about what’s next. It’s a privilege to help shape that journey. You can follow Eliza on YouTube at Eliza Gold Music and keep an eye on her upcoming releases, because this is just the beginning.
