Empowering Design Meets Practical Studio Work
This was my second studio shoot with Jenni, the founder of Kinki Couture, and this time it felt even more cohesive. The ideas flowed, the planning was spot-on, and the whole session benefited from the trust built through previous collaborations. Jenni is a joy to work with, focused, creative, and a genuinely lovely person. Her brand is a reflection of that energy: thoughtful, bold, and empowering.
Our model for the day was Anna Key (they/them), who I’ve worked with several times through the Norwich burlesque scene. Anna is always professional, expressive, and relaxed in front of the camera. That familiarity made it easy to focus on the shoot’s objective: high-quality product photography for Kinki Couture’s latest designs.
Why Studio Photography Works
We shot everything at my Bentwaters studio. Working here means I can control the lighting setup, adjust backdrops instantly, and give clients a comfortable, private space with changing rooms and all the facilities they need. When working on something as intricate as lingerie or harnesses, especially designs as visually rich as those from Kinki Couture, precision matters. Lighting needs to be deliberate. Angles need to show the fit, construction, and decorative features of each piece.
A shoot like this isn’t just about photographing a model. It’s about showcasing the product in a way that makes sense for social media, e-commerce, and promotional use. These are commercial assets, not just pretty pictures.
Branding vs Product Photography: What’s the Difference?
For small start-ups, investing in quality imagery is a must. It defines how your audience perceives you before they even read a word.
- Product photography is image-by-image. Each piece is styled, lit, and edited for clarity and presentation. It’s about detail, shape, and colour accuracy. Typically priced per image, as the editing workload is higher.
- Branding photography captures you, your team, and your story. Think headshots, lifestyle portraits, and styled moments that express your brand’s values. These shoots are usually priced by time, with a broader selection of images and less retouching needed overall.
Both are essential. One builds your visual shopfront. The other creates a narrative and trust behind it.
Showing the Face Behind the Brand
I always recommend business owners have a professional portrait as part of their image package. Jenni agreed, and we took some headshots during the session. It gives customers a real human to connect with and adds professionalism to websites and press features. It’s not just about showing the product, but also about who is behind it.

Respect, Sensitivity, and Intent
When working with lingerie, harnesses, or kinkwear, there’s always a need for a respectful, professional approach. These images were created for product listings, branding, and promotional work. It’s important that every image remains suitable for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and online shops that have strict content rules.
We were focused on clarity and creativity, not provocation. While the products themselves might draw attention for their style and detail, the aim was to represent them authentically and respectfully.
Sessions like this require clear communication, trust between everyone involved, and a shared understanding of the line between tasteful presentation and content restrictions. All of that was present throughout this shoot, and it made for a smooth, productive day.
Why Small Businesses Should Prioritise Imagery
If you’re building a brand, don’t cut corners on visuals. Your product might be incredible, but if your imagery doesn’t reflect that, potential customers may scroll past.
Professional photography:
- Builds trust
- Shows off the detail and finish of your product
- Elevates your website and social channels
- Keeps you compliant with social platform guidelines
And most importantly, it sets the tone for your brand. Whether you’re selling luxury lingerie, artisan crafts, or handmade skincare, imagery does the talking before a single word is read.
A Note to Other Business Owners
If you’re running a small business and need product or branding photography, my studio at Bentwaters is set up to make the process simple.
Product photography like this is quoted per image, depending on how many items you need covered and how intricate the editing is. Branding photography is priced hourly and includes a set of lightly edited images that tell the story of you and your business.
If you’re unsure where to start, I’m happy to advise. Let’s create visuals that do your work justice.
