Capturing the inner workings of a high-tech company like ETS EMC isn’t your everyday commercial photography assignment. This job was something special, and one I’m genuinely proud of. Based near Stansted Airport in Essex, ETS (Electromagnetic Testing Services Ltd) is an independent, UKAS-accredited company providing specialist Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing and antenna calibration.
Photographing a Technical Environment
From the moment I arrived at their two-acre site, I knew this wasn’t going to be a standard shoot. ETS EMC isn’t just another office. It’s a place packed with highly sensitive equipment, complex testing environments, and engineers solving real technical challenges. My job was to document that, without giving away any of the proprietary or confidential systems that form part of their service offering.
That balance, showcasing the facility while respecting client confidentiality, is one of the most important aspects of this kind of commercial photography. And it’s one I take seriously.
What ETS EMC Does
Before the shoot, I spent time getting to grips with what ETS actually do. They’ve been around for over 25 years, building a reputation for tackling the kind of EMC problems that others walk away from.
Their services include:
- Pre-compliance and compliance testing for a huge range of product types
- On-site testing and audits for manufacturers
- Specialist industry testing including railway, RTCA, FCC, EMF, and UKCA certification
- Advisory and troubleshooting services for complex electromagnetic issues
- Antenna calibration (UKAS accredited, from 20 MHz to 18 GHz)
ETS acts as an external EMC department for their clients, helping them navigate compliance rules and solve electromagnetic issues before products go to market.
Visual Storytelling: Bringing Their Facility to Life
I wanted the images to reflect the scale and scope of the business. That meant working across different spaces, from the quiet calm of their modern office areas to the highly technical testing rooms.
Some highlights included:
- The control room and desk setups with branded monitors
- The custom-built testing labs, complete with power analyzers, shielding enclosures, and antenna calibration setups
- Anechoic chambers that look like something from a sci-fi set but are essential for isolating electromagnetic interference
- Reception and kitchen areas that humanise the brand
- Their mobile testing unit, a van fully fitted for field testing, which was parked up outside the site
Each area had its own lighting challenge, but I used a consistent flash setup throughout. Natural light wasn’t an option. Controlling the look was key to keeping the images clean, consistent, and free from harsh colour casts or reflections.
Respecting Confidentiality in Commercial Photography
One of the trickiest aspects of this shoot was working around restricted equipment. In some of the testing labs, I was asked not to photograph specific hardware or certain parts of the setup. In other cases, items had to be retouched out during post-production.
This kind of discretion is something I offer as standard. Not every commercial photography job ends up on my portfolio. Some never see the light of day beyond the client’s website, internal reports, or trade documentation. That’s entirely up to the business.
With ETS EMC, they were kind enough to allow me to showcase a selection of the final edited images, once they’d signed off every frame. Some images went through multiple proofing rounds. That’s just part of the job when you’re working with intellectual property.
Why Visuals Matter for Businesses Like ETS EMC
For companies working in complex or technical fields, it can be difficult to communicate what they do in a way that feels accessible. That’s where photography comes in.
Strong commercial images can:
- Build trust with potential customers by showing real facilities and team setups
- Improve branding and make websites more professional and credible
- Support sales by helping clients visualise the testing process
- Provide useful assets for reports, brochures, trade shows, and compliance documents
Photography allows clients to see behind the scenes and understand how the business actually works.
For ETS EMC, this was especially important. Their facility is full of advanced technology, but it’s also approachable, clean, and highly professional. I wanted that to come through clearly in every image.
Returning for Video
After the stills shoot, I was invited back to capture a short promotional video. This time, the focus was more on movement, walkthroughs of the facility, staff at work, and a narrated overview of the company’s services. It was a great experience seeing how the images translated into a visual brand story on screen.
Video is a great companion to still photography for any business trying to engage with their audience online or at exhibitions.
Trust and Professionalism Come First
Every commercial job is different. With ETS EMC, I had to work with discretion, precision, and clarity, always conscious that what I captured had to reflect their brand without revealing anything sensitive.
I ask all my commercial clients for permission before sharing any imagery from a shoot. That includes ETS EMC. Once I had their approval, I was able to create this case study as a way of showing what thoughtful, professional commercial photography looks like.
Final Thoughts
This project reminded me just how varied and rewarding commercial photography can be. Working with ETS EMC was a genuine pleasure. The team were kind, helpful, and incredibly knowledgeable. The environment was spotless and well-organised, a dream for a photographer trying to compose clean shots.
And while the technology was impressive, what really stood out was the professionalism of the people. I hope the images do that justice.
