Good product photography carries a lot of weight in e-commerce. My studio near Bentwaters, close to Woodbridge in Suffolk, does commercial work, and a recent project with Jill from MillieMoo Knitwear was a good reminder of how much professional images matter to an online shop.
The Brief
Jill wanted to refresh the imagery for her online shops, MillieMoo Knitwear and her Etsy store. Her range covers scarves, shawls, wraps and ponchos in materials like 100% cotton, cotton-mixed yarns and a Merino and silk mix. With products this colourful and textured, she knew the photography had to do them justice.
The Importance of Product Photography
For any retailer, product photography is the first thing a customer engages with, a digital storefront for the business. Products need to be shot clearly, without background distractions and with enough light to show the detail. With MillieMoo‘s mix of fabrics and designs, each product’s texture, colour and form had to come through.
Textiles are tricky, since the detail can get lost. Every frame here was set up to show the colour and craftsmanship in each MillieMoo piece.
Lifestyle Shots: Beyond the Product
Lifestyle shots matter too, since they let customers picture a product in use. For MillieMoo we worked with two models, Isabelle and Jill’s husband Roy, who added a personal touch to the catalogue. These shots build a bit of story and give a clearer sense of scale, texture and how a piece is worn.
Meeting the Target Market
Jill knew her market well, and her choice of models reflected it. Models who suit the audience add authenticity and help customers connect with the product.
The Smooth Sailing of the Shoot
Thanks to Jill’s preparation and a clear brief, the shoot ran without a hitch. A ready client and a defined plan usually make for sharper, more focused results, and this was no exception.
Conclusion
Product photography does real work in online retail. A shoot like MillieMoo’s, tailored to the brand and its audience, improves how the shop reads to customers. Here in Suffolk I bring that same attention to every commercial project, because in a competitive market the images are not the place to cut corners.
