Introduction
Every headshot session is a little different. Recently I photographed Ben, better known as the Stoma Diaries, and it turned into one of the more memorable days I’ve had in the studio. Ben’s story is one of resilience, and a good profile photo turned out to matter more to his work than most.
The Man Behind the Stoma Diaries
Ben is an ambassador for Coloplast UK and a source of encouragement for others living with a stoma. A stoma is an opening in the abdomen that diverts waste away from the digestive or urinary system. Ben has lived with one because of Crohn’s Disease, and he’s turned that experience into advocacy and education.
The Importance of a Profile Photo
A profile photo is more than a picture; it stands in for who you are online. Ben came to me to update the images across his social media, since a professional headshot is the face of his advocacy work in Ipswich and Suffolk, where he’s based.
Behind the Scenes
Ben let me film a behind-the-scenes video of the session, now on YouTube. It shows some of what goes into a headshot and the rapport between photographer and subject, and it reflects how openly Ben talks about life with a stoma.
A Conversation That Mattered
Ben was happy to share his experiences during the shoot. His honesty about a subject many find awkward to discuss was striking, and it added real depth to the photographs.
An Adventurous Spirit
As detailed on Coloplast UK’s site, Ben recently spent two weeks on a scientific research trip to the Mexican jungle and coral reefs. Despite understandable worries about travelling with a stoma, he took the right precautions and even went scuba diving, which gave his confidence a real lift.
The Shoot Experience
The session was relaxed, which is exactly what you want for natural headshots. Ben was at ease in front of the camera, and the shoot was as enjoyable as it was productive.
