Actor Headshots in Suffolk
A good actor headshot does one thing well: it shows casting directors who you are. Not who you could be with better lighting, not a version of you that looks polished to the point of anonymity. Just you, clearly, at your best.
I photograph actors at my studio near Woodbridge in Suffolk. Sessions are relaxed and unhurried, with time for multiple looks and the space to find what actually works for your face and the roles you are going for. Whether you are submitting to Spotlight for the first time or updating an existing profile, I will make sure you leave with something usable.
What makes a good actor headshot
The best actor headshots are specific. They tell a casting director something about who you are and what you can do before you walk into the room. That means your expression, your energy, and the way you are lit all have to be working together rather than just looking technically correct.
Most actors need at least two distinct looks: one that leans commercial, and one that is more character-led. Beyond that, it depends on your range and the work you are going for. We will talk about this before the shoot so the session is pointed at something specific rather than just generating a lot of images.
I shoot on a range of backdrops including the industry-standard grey and natural tones. If you have preferences or requirements from your agent, bring them and we will work to them. If you are not sure what you need yet, I am happy to give you a steer based on what I see in front of the camera.
Who books actor headshot sessions
Actors updating Spotlight
Your Spotlight profile is the first thing casting directors see. If your current headshots are more than a year or two old, or no longer look like you, it is worth updating them.
Drama school graduates
You are setting up your professional profile for the first time and need a strong set of images to represent you across agencies and casting platforms.
Actors submitting to agencies
Agency submissions need headshots that stand out without being distracting. Clean, clear, and specific to who you are as a performer.
Actors covering multiple castings
You need more than one look, whether that is commercial versus character, or different types of role you are actively pursuing. A session with multiple setups gives you more to work with.
Performers new to professional headshots
If you have not done a proper headshot session before, the process can feel a bit daunting. It is not. I will walk you through it.
Stage and screen actors
Whether your work is primarily theatre, television, or film, the fundamentals of a strong headshot are the same. I have photographed actors across all three.
What is included in every session
How a session works
-
Before the shoot
Think about what you need the images to do
Before the session, have a think about the types of role you are actively going for and whether you need images that cover different ends of your range. If your agent has specific requirements or preferences, make a note of them and bring them with you. The clearer you are about what the images need to do, the more useful the session will be.
If you are not sure, that is fine too. We can work it out at the start of the session based on what I see in the room.
-
On the day
The session itself
Sessions run up to four hours, though most actors find they have a strong set well within that. We will work through your different looks and setups, adjusting lighting, backdrop, and direction as we go.
I shoot a lot during a session so you have real options when you see the gallery. The aim is not just technically clean images but ones where your expression is doing something specific.
-
After the shoot
Your edited gallery
I will edit the best images and upload them to a private online gallery. You will receive a link and password by email. Take your time choosing. The package you booked includes a set number of edited digital images at full resolution. If you would like more, mark them in the gallery and I will invoice you for the extras.
Please allow 14 to 21 days for your gallery to be ready.

Spotlight does not mandate a specific background colour, but mid-grey is the industry standard and reads well both on screen and in print. I have grey and a range of neutral tones available in studio. If you have a preference or your agent has specified something, let me know before the session.

Two or three outfits is usually enough. Think about the types of role you are going for and choose clothes that suit each one rather than items you just like wearing. Solid colours tend to work better than busy patterns, and it is worth avoiding anything with prominent logos or graphics. If you are unsure, bring a few options and we can decide what works in the room.

I edit every image to a clean, professional standard. For actor headshots, I keep retouching natural rather than heavy. Casting directors need to see what you actually look like, so the goal is to remove distractions rather than smooth out what makes your face interesting. If you want more detailed retouching on specific images, that can be arranged as an add-on.

Sessions run up to four hours. Most actors find they have a strong set in two to three hours, depending on how many looks they are covering. There is no pressure to fill the full time, and equally no hard cut-off if things are going well.

The studio is at Rendlesham near Woodbridge, roughly 20 minutes from Ipswich and about an hour from Norwich. It is easy to find and there is free parking on site. A lot of actors travelling from further afield find it a straightforward trip. If you would prefer an on-location session in or near your city, get in touch and we can discuss what is possible.
