Family Portrait Photography in Suffolk
A family portrait session is a straightforward thing. You come to the studio, I photograph you together, and you leave with images that actually look like you. Not stiff, not posed to within an inch of your life, and not dependent on everyone being in a perfect mood.
I work with families of all sizes at my studio near Woodbridge in Suffolk. Sessions are relaxed, there is no strict schedule, and I am used to working with children who take a while to warm up. The photographs tend to come out better once everyone has stopped worrying about the photographs.
What a family portrait session involves
Sessions run at my studio at Base Business Park, Rendlesham, near Woodbridge. It is a spacious, well-lit studio with room for everyone, a range of backdrops, and space for changing if you are bringing outfit options. There is free parking directly outside.
A typical family session lasts around an hour, though there is no hard cut-off. If things are going well and you want to keep shooting, we can. If you have young children and everyone hits a wall after forty minutes, that is fine too. I would rather get the images in the time that works for your family than push for the sake of filling a slot.
I will create a variety of images during the session: group shots, smaller groupings, individual portraits if you want them, and a mix of more composed and more natural frames. You will have plenty to choose from when you see the gallery.
Who books a family portrait session
Families marking a milestone
A new baby, a big birthday, children at a particular age you want to capture properly. Something worth a photograph that is more than a phone snap.
Parents who want something for the wall
A proper portrait of the family, printed well and framed. The kind of image you actually hang rather than leave on your phone.
Families who have never done this before
Not everyone is comfortable in front of a camera, and that is completely normal. The session is designed to be relaxed. I will work at your pace.
Couples
Whether you want portraits together to mark an occasion or just because you have never had a proper photograph taken as a couple, these sessions work for two people as well.
Extended families
Multiple generations, a gathering, a reunion. The studio has the space and I have experience photographing larger groups without it turning into a logistical disaster.
Families with young children
Children rarely perform on cue. I take time at the start of every session to let younger family members get comfortable, and I work with whatever mood is in the room on the day.
What is included in every session
How a family portrait session works
-
Booking
Choose a date and pay the session fee
You book through the online booking form, choose a date and time, and pay the session fee to secure your slot. The session fee is non-refundable. Once booked, you will receive a confirmation email with everything you need, including directions and parking information.
-
On the day
The session itself
I will take a few minutes at the start to get everyone settled, particularly with younger children. There is no rush to get straight into it. Once everyone is comfortable, I will work through a variety of setups: full group shots, smaller arrangements, and individual portraits if you want them.
Most sessions last around an hour, but I follow your family’s lead. If we finish sooner, that is fine. If things are going well and you want to continue, we can.
-
After the shoot
Your edited gallery
A few days after your session, I will upload your edited images to a private online gallery. You will receive a link and password by email. Take your time choosing the images you want. The package you booked includes a set number of edited digital images. If you would like more, mark them in the gallery and I will invoice you for the extras.
Prints and wall art are available too, just ask. I am happy to give advice on sizes and formats if that would help.

This is probably the most common concern I hear before a family session, and it is usually fine on the day. I always take a few minutes at the start to let younger children get comfortable in the studio before we start shooting. I work at their pace and I know what to look for when a child is on the verge of being done. If things do go sideways, we adapt. A quick break, a change of setup, or just waiting a minute usually gets things back on track.
-
Wear clothes that feel like you. Coordinating colours or tones tends to work better than matching outfits, and it is worth avoiding very busy patterns that can dominate a photograph. Smart-casual is a good default if you are unsure. Bringing a second outfit gives you more variety in the gallery, and the studio has space for changing.

Most family sessions last around an hour. With young children, that is often enough. If everyone is happy and we have more to cover, we can go longer. I do not impose a strict finish time, and there is no pressure to rush.
-
Yes. I usually work through a mix of full group shots, smaller groupings, and individual portraits if you want them. Just let me know what you are hoping to get before the session and I will make sure we cover it.

On-location sessions can be arranged, either at your home or at an outdoor location in Suffolk. I charge an hourly rate for location work. Get in touch to discuss what you have in mind and I can give you a price.

Your edited gallery is usually ready within a few days of the session. You will receive an email with a link and password when it is ready. Take as much time as you need to browse and make your choices. There is no pressure to decide straight away.
