When Mark, Evie’s dad, reached out to me with the proposal for a unique photoshoot featuring Evie’s Owls, I was simply overjoyed. Working with Evie, a young entrepreneur, has always been a delight. There’s something incredibly enchanting about her passion for these majestic birds at the tender age of nine. These personal projects never fail to instigate my creative juices, allowing me to experiment with various ideas and intricate lighting techniques – a perfect mix for headshot photography. My long-time collaborator, Isabelle, was immediately on board when I extended the invitation.
Our collective creative vision led us to the concept of an Athena-styled photoshoot, a nod to the Olympian goddess often associated with owls. With our subject matter decided, the preparation stage was set into motion, highlighting the collaboration between my studio near Woodbridge and the great Suffolk community.
Evie’s Owls pointed us in the direction of a scenic riverside location in Norwich, a perfect backdrop for our Athena shoot. The next piece of the puzzle was sorting out Isabelle’s costume – an integral part of creating the desired ambience for our Ipswich photography session. A huge thank you goes to Sally from Masquerade Hire, located near Earl Stonham, Suffolk, for her invaluable assistance in selecting an authentic costume and customising it to suit our theme.
The entire experience was nothing short of exciting, filled with the thrill of stepping outside the confines of the ordinary. My son, William, added a special touch by capturing all the behind-the-scenes action in a video, ensuring we immortalise the unique spirit of this project. Amy, my apprentice for the day, brought an additional dynamic to the proceedings as I guided her through the ins and outs of lighting techniques in a hands-on setting. The atmosphere was positively buzzing, reinforcing my love for the unconventional.
While I specialise in headshot photography and most portrait sessions are conducted in my Suffolk studio in Bentwaters, I’m always open to exploring diverse settings. This project was a testament to that spirit, reminding me of the magic in venturing beyond the studio.
