Snapdragon Cabaret is a vibrant, Norwich-based performance group that celebrates local talent and encourages body confidence. When I had the opportunity to work on their Halloween-themed promotional photography, I knew the shoot had to capture the fierce energy of their performers. This blog post shares the experience of the shoot, the creative process behind the images, and what made this collaboration so special.
The Unique Venue: The Undercroft Gallery
For this photoshoot, we selected The Undercroft Gallery, a raw, uncurated art space in the heart of Norwich. Located beneath the Memorial Gardens, this venue has a rugged charm that made it perfect for the moody, Halloween aesthetic we aimed for.
The Undercroft Gallery is tucked away in a prominent area, yet its subterranean nature gives it a sense of hidden allure. This flexibility allowed Snapdragon Cabaret to put their own stamp on the space, using the grey floors and concrete ceilings to amplify their dramatic performances. The minimalist setting allowed me to focus on the performers, keeping the shots uncluttered but visually intense.
A Team Effort: Collaborating with Norwich University Students
Working with Snapdragon Cabaret is always a high-energy experience, but this shoot was unique as it brought together a broad team. I was joined by three students from Norwich University:
• Manson Instagram
• Rosie Instagram
• Ethan Instagram
Their involvement lightened the load, making it possible to give the performers the attention they needed. Having these additional hands allowed us to cover various aspects of the shoot, ensuring no detail was missed.
Performers Who Shone in Front of the Lens
Each performer at the Snapdragon Cabaret brings a unique style and personality. The Halloween theme made their costumes and personas even more striking. Here are some of the talented performers I had the pleasure of photographing:
Dick Strawberry
Cherry Pop
Nixie Norvak
Temptress Lilith
Ruby Mental
Entrapta
Humphrey Lovin
Lady Cleo
Joystick Aphrodite
Mx AnnaKey
Amy
Kitty Mean/Rodentia Bob
Ruby Luxe
The Witch Devine
Mina Pearl
Lola LaRouge
Mia Moon
Ernie Danlos
Saint Darling
Weird Gal
Miss Tigris
Elfie Elixir
The Black Widow
Several of these performers were already familiar to me from previous shoots, and it was fantastic to reconnect. Some were new faces, and their excitement and creativity brought fresh energy to the day.
A Glimpse Behind the Scenes
If you’d like to see a behind-the-scenes look at the photoshoot, check out this BTS video. The video captures the atmosphere of the day, including some fantastic moments with the performers.
The shoot was fast-paced, with so many performers to photograph, but the energy was infectious, and everyone was on top form. By the end of the day, we had a collection of images that truly represented the cabaret’s essence, fun, fierce, and unapologetically bold.
Techniques Used to Capture the Performers’ Essence
When photographing cabaret performances, especially for promotional purposes, it’s important to focus on the performers’ personalities and movements. For this shoot, I employed several techniques to bring out the best in each performer:
1. Low-Key Lighting: The Halloween theme lent itself to a darker, more dramatic style. I used low-key lighting to create a moody atmosphere, letting shadows emphasise the performers’ striking costumes.
2. Wide-Angle Shots: The expansive space of the Undercroft and the variety of performers meant that wide-angle shots were essential to capturing the full scope of the event.
3. Action Shots: Cabaret performances are all about movement. Capturing mid-performance shots allowed me to showcase the dynamic energy of each performer.
4. Close-Ups: While action shots were important, close-ups helped me capture the personality and emotion in each performer’s expression, giving the promotional materials a more intimate feel.
What Makes Snapdragon Cabaret Special
What I love most about Snapdragon Cabaret is the way they empowers performers. Their mission goes beyond entertainment, they teach body confidence, helping individuals express themselves fully through performance. This positive energy shines through in every shot, whether it’s the flamboyance of Temptress Lilith or the sultry elegance of Lady Cleo.
Promotional photography for events like Snapdragon Cabaret is about more than just taking good photos, it’s about capturing the spirit of the event and conveying it to an audience who might not be familiar with cabaret. For Snapdragon, this meant focusing on bold, theatrical poses, costumes that demanded attention, and an atmosphere that screamed confidence.
The Importance of Promotional Photography for Performers
For performers, promotional photography is a critical aspect of building a brand and securing future bookings. High-quality, well-composed images can make the difference between standing out or being overlooked. With events like Snapdragon Cabaret, which combine live performance and entertainment, photographs need to convey a sense of the event’s energy and excitement.
As a professional event photographer in Suffolk, my goal is to make sure that every performer gets the recognition they deserve. These photos aren’t just about documenting a show, they’re about creating a visual legacy that performers can use to promote themselves for years to come.
Looking Forward to Future Collaborations
Snapdragon Cabaret is always a joy to work with, and I look forward to collaborating with them again in the future. The Halloween-themed shoot was particularly fun, thanks to the creative costumes and makeup. Each performer brought something new to the table, and it was an honour to help them shine.
