Jewellery photo shoot with multiple models
This was a good chance to work with some creative people on a jewellery photo shoot. Jackey of Jackey L Jewellers wanted a slider for her website that showed her range of jewellery rather than a single piece, which can quickly date or sell. Much of Jackey’s jewellery is bespoke and made as one-off pieces, so instead of asking each model to wear one item, we agreed to pose them in several, while keeping a loose theme to each portrait.
The brief was to feature the jewellery without focusing on one item, using models with real character. The background needed to be dark and muted but with a strong texture to lift both the model and the jewellery. We wanted a sense of implied nudity, but only in a way that kept the attention on each model and the pieces they wore. This was handled carefully, always with a chaperone or Jackey present. Make-up was kept to a minimum so the jewellery stayed the focus.
Over six weeks we worked on this product photography shoot, which took a lot of planning and coordination to make sure everyone knew when and where to be. It was good to collaborate with some enthusiastic models to produce a set of six images that share a common feel while each holds its own.
These studio portraits, made with Jackey L Jewellers and the six models, are below. You can watch the behind the scenes footage on YouTube.
Steffi, bespoke jewellery photo shoot
Steffi features often in my shoots, and she is a pleasure to work with. Her refined look and golden eyes suited some of Jackey’s more colourful bespoke pieces, and a hand full of rings was a good way to show off those nails.
Poppy, silver jewellery photo shoot
Having known Poppy for a few years, it was good to catch up and take her portrait. Her naturally pretty look sets off the crispness of the silver jewellery here, and those piercing eyes and freckles give the image an extra lift.
Lolaelan, pearl jewellery photo shoot
With Lolaelan’s tattoos, we wanted jewellery with a bit more punch. Her edgy look was matched with pearls draped over her back and wrists, a less conventional way to wear them, and I think she models them beautifully.
Ania, gold jewellery photoshoot
Having photographed Ania before, I knew we would get a good photograph with a professional and driven young woman. Her dark hair and eyes and tanned skin lend themselves to a bronzed look, so gold jewellery was the natural choice.
Ross, masculine jewellery photo shoot
Ross is a professional male model who has featured in television adverts and modelled for the likes of Topman, Ted Baker and Adidas, among others. I have known Ross for several years and was his and his wife Hannah’s wedding photographer back in 2015. This shoot was to advertise Jackey’s new line of men’s and unisex silver jewellery. Ross needed no direction from me at all, which made my job easy.
Jane, elegant jewellery photoshoot
I have been lucky to work with Jane before, a lovely woman who is always professional and needs little or no direction. Jane’s elegant, classic look suits some of Jackey’s finest pieces, and her smile and friendly manner come through in this photo.
