A Creative Celebration of Pregnancy, Femininity, and Strength
After our outdoor maternity announcement shoot at Tunstall Woods, Karolina was keen to follow up with something more fashion-forward in the studio. She wanted a set of portraits that celebrated body confidence, femininity, and the unique strength that comes with pregnancy. This session was as much about artistic expression as it was about capturing a beautiful personal milestone. Every look we created was designed to reflect a different side of Karolina’s identity, from bold and sculptural to playful and soft. Throughout the shoot, she carried a confident presence, and her creative openness allowed us to produce a truly varied set of portraits. It was great to have her friend Justyna present as a chaperone on the day, and while Karolina stepped into one of her more styled looks, Justyna also had her own portrait session in the studio. That will be featured in a separate post.
Karolina’s shoot was built around multiple distinct looks. Each one had its own styling, lighting treatment, and emotional tone. The result is a collection of images that feel editorial, symbolic, and deeply personal.
Look One: Pearls on Skin
Karolina wore nude-toned underwear with adhesive pearls placed across her skin, complemented by pearl earrings and a bracelet. The lighting was soft and directional to highlight her form without losing subtle textures. This setup gave a sense of classic elegance with a sculptural feel. Pearls have long been associated with femininity, purity, and fertility, and here they were used to enhance the natural curve and grace of pregnancy.
Look Two: Summer Playfulness
A bright pink swimsuit, a child’s inflatable swim ring, and a clear umbrella brought an entirely different tone to the session. Set against a light blue backdrop with clean high-key lighting, this look was playful, cheerful, and a bit tongue-in-cheek. It was a nod to childhood, holiday snapshots, and the kind of fun styling you’d find in an editorial spread.
Look Three and Four: Paper Tear Setups
We experimented with a torn paper backdrop to create the illusion of Karolina breaking through the set. In one version she emerges bare-shouldered with bold red lips and a strong expression. In another, she wears black and red floral lingerie with an open shirt. These looks played with the idea of transformation and emergence. The symbolism felt fitting for a maternity shoot. It’s about change, strength, and stepping into a new phase of life with confidence.
Look Five: Domestic Ironing Satire
For this setup, Karolina wore a bold red outfit and stood behind an ironing board while lingerie hung behind her on a washing line. The pose was straight-faced, and the lighting was simple. It was a cheeky reference to gender roles and domestic expectations. Mixing humour and irony, this image poked fun at the traditional narrative around women and motherhood.
Look Six: Tulle Robe Elegance
A sheer white tulle robe added a bridal, romantic quality to the session. We kept the lighting soft and wrapped around her for a classic look. This is one of the most timeless images from the set. The texture of the robe combined with her serene pose made for a truly graceful portrait that could easily sit in a magazine editorial or a personal family album.
Look Seven: Childhood Nostalgia
Wearing bright red underwear and layers of multicoloured plastic hair clips, Karolina leaned into a more surreal and playful setup. The clips and childlike accessories were styled as a nod to childhood and the idea of motherhood as a return to the world of toys, play, and colour. The final image was quirky and confident, shot against a neutral background with deliberate lighting to draw out the textures.
Look Eight: Hat Conceal
This look kept things stripped back. Karolina posed nude, holding a wide black hat across her chest. The composition was bold and minimalist, letting her body form the focal point. It was a confident pose, with shadow shaping to add contrast and structure. The image captures the balance between glamour and modesty without distraction.
Look Nine: Lace and Butterflies
Dressed in white lace tights and a matching bralette, Karolina sat on a low white cube, her body adorned with golden butterfly appliqués. The lighting was dramatic, with a spotlit background to add shape. This image played heavily on symbolism. Butterflies represent transformation and rebirth, which aligns closely with the experience of pregnancy. The result was elegant, artistic, and introspective.
Look Ten: Kiss Prints
Karolina wore a white shirt open at the belly, her skin covered in red lipstick kiss marks. This look was sensual and playful. The lighting was warm and soft, keeping the overall mood romantic and celebratory. It captured the idea of being cherished and appreciated, a fitting end to the shoot.
Throughout the session, Karolina moved with ease and was fully engaged in each setup. We worked carefully to make sure everything was done with comfort and safety in mind. As with all maternity shoots, creating a safe, calm space is my top priority. Temperature, privacy, breaks, and body positioning are all things I manage closely to make sure the client feels supported. No image is ever more important than a person’s wellbeing.
Maternity portraits are a powerful experience. They’re not just about documenting the bump. They’re about recognising the strength it takes to carry a child and the beauty in the changes your body goes through. A session like this can be uplifting, creative, and confidence-building. You get to see yourself not just as an expectant parent but as a whole person. You are allowed to be expressive, stylish, artistic, or even humorous. There is no one way to celebrate pregnancy, and that’s what this shoot with Karolina really showed.
If you’re considering a maternity shoot, I always recommend bringing someone you trust along with you. A partner, a close friend, or a family member can help you feel at ease. Karolina brought Justyna, who was wonderful to have on set. She offered encouragement, helped between looks, and even stepped in for her own portrait session. That shoot will be featured in the next blog post.
This maternity shoot was creative, personal, and full of personality. It was a pleasure to work with Karolina again and capture this part of her journey.
