A Photoshoot with Purpose
Earlier this month, I photographed Sophia in a studio photoshoot for Scope, followed by several outdoor images to support her fundraising campaign. Sophia and I have collaborated on many occasions, and this project stands out for its clear purpose and heartfelt advocacy. Sophia is preparing to run the London Marathon 2025 to raise funds for Scope, a UK-based charity that works to improve the lives of disabled people. The photoshoot was created to generate visuals for her Scope UK marathon fundraising efforts across social media, digital platforms, and her JustGiving page.
Sophia’s Story: Why She’s Running
Sophia’s reason for running the London Marathon for charity is grounded in personal experience. Living with dyslexia and dyspraxia has made her aware of the hidden barriers many people with learning disabilities face. That personal insight has fuelled her decision to support Scope.
“Every step I take through London will be in support of Scope’s mission. Your contribution helps drive vital change in society, providing essential services and advocating for the rights of disabled people across the UK.” She is encouraging others to get involved, to raise awareness, and to provide financial backing where possible. Who Scope Supports
Scope’s mission is simple but powerful: equality for disabled people. The organisation supports individuals with:
- Physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy, and cerebral palsy
- Learning disabilities like autism, dyslexia, and dyspraxia
- Sensory impairments, including vision and hearing loss
- Neurological conditions like epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s
- Mental health difficulties, including depression and suicide bereavement
- Chronic conditions that interfere with daily life, such as diabetes Scope provides information services, advocacy support, and peer mentoring to help people live independently.
In the UK, 1 in 4 people live with a disability. They are twice as likely to be unemployed and face an average extra cost of over £1,000 per month to live with dignity (Scope, 2024).
Photographing for a Cause
The goal of this shoot was to create impactful, versatile images suitable for campaign messaging and digital sharing. The results are a combination of charity runner photoshoots and social media portraits for charity.
Image Approach:
- Studio session: Clean backdrops, direct lighting, soft shadows.
- Outdoor session: Contrasting natural elements and angular urban lines.
- Outfits: Training kit and Scope-branded shirts.
- Tone: Honest, confident, and empowering. The images were prepared for web, with optimised alt text containing terms such as Sophia marathon fundraiser and Running for Scope UK.

A Closer Look at the Marathon Prep
Training for a marathon is no small task. Sophia is currently balancing her job, personal commitments, and a structured training routine in preparation for 27 April 2025. She is tracking progress weekly, focusing on endurance, form, and nutrition.
What Her Training Looks Like:
- Long-distance runs twice a week
- Hill and interval sessions for cardiovascular performance
- Stretching and physiotherapy to avoid injury
- Mindset preparation through journaling and rest This makes the studio marathon portrait series all the more relevant, offering viewers a snapshot of dedication behind the scenes.

Reflections from the Shoot
Having photographed Sophia several times over the years, I can say this shoot brought out a deeper, more purposeful energy. The combination of personal connection and visual clarity made for a particularly effective campaign set. From an SEO standpoint, keywords such as Disability equality charity runner, Fundraising for Scope, and East of England photographer were incorporated through metadata and copy to enhance discoverability.
