I recently had the pleasure of welcoming Lucy to the studio for a model portfolio shoot with a twist. Lucy is a lovely young lady who is sports-mad. She takes the gym very seriously and also plays football for Woodbridge Town FC women’s team. Whilst it was important that we fulfilled the fitness shoot aspect of these images we also wanted to try something a little different. Art has a huge influence on my photography and we wanted to get a fine art portrait feel to these sets of images. We took our time, and with Lucy’s amazing physique, and the clever use of light and shadow we recreated a typical Old Masters oil painting in the style of chiaroscuro.
Chiaroscuro comes from Italian and translates as ‘light’ and ‘dark’. This style of art became popular in the Renaissance period. The contrast of the two elements of light and darkness combine to create a dramatic image, with added richness. Chiaroscuro can also be used to add mystery or convey a sense of foreboding danger. Whilst chiaroscuro can be applied to still life, landscape and even food photography, in portraiture, it can be used to enhance beauty; in particular by way of highlighting and sculpting. This style suited Lucy’s athletic figure perfectly. I was really able to highlight her muscles, creating an image of both female strength and beauty. I believe the final images promote body positivity linking directly to my recent boudoir shoots.
Portrait packages start at £110, which includes the session fee and one edited image. If you would be interested in taking part in a fitness shoot with a twist please do get in touch.
