Halloween Photoshoot with Becky and Evie

Working with Becky is always a ‘treat’, and our recent ‘spooktacular’ shoot was no exception. We fancied a bit of fun, as we both love being creative. As always Becky did a ‘fang-tastic’ job on the make-up. We usually work on portraits where the make-up suits a wedding, prom or night out, so seeing her imagination come to life was something else. Evie, the true professional she is, looked hauntingly ‘boo-tiful’, and being a performer she made it easy to get some great shots quickly, so none of us had to work the ‘graveyard shift’. Becky also made Evie’s ‘dead’ impressive headdress, which ‘witch’ lent itself fully to the style of the shoot. We used a smoke machine, and it fitted the chilling mood perfectly. We had so much fun with this one. I always try to make the studio an enjoyable place so people relax and don’t get too frightened of the camera. The ‘skull-timate’ aim was moody, atmospheric images, focused mainly on the face and the outfit, and I hope you’ll agree we got some ‘blood’y good photos.

Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, goes back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III made November 1st a day to honour all saints. The season has been the subject of plenty of art since, the most famous arguably Edvard Munch’s The Scream. Munch said the work came from an experience out walking with friends, when he described the sky turning ‘blood red’ and saw ‘tongues of fire’ above the city.
