I love taking people’s portraits, but working with someone of Evie’s talent is always a treat. Evie is a singer, dancer, actor and singing teacher, though it was her love of dance, ballet in particular, that brought this shoot to life. We talked through the aims beforehand and settled on three strong images from each set and look. That came easily. Evie is used to the camera and, after years of it, knows exactly what works. We had a lot of fun, and it was great that she could go en pointe for some of the shots.
For the final set I played with light in the style of chiaroscuro. It’s an Italian term meaning ‘light and dark’, a dramatic technique used in both art and photography for impact. The bold contrast pulls the eye to the lit areas, so with Evie I let the light fall on her face and her poses, which is what we wanted the viewer to see most. Ever the professional, she came up with great poses and made my job easy. A true natural in front of the camera, she is a photographer’s dream, and the shoot ran as smoothly as we both hoped.
Most of my portrait sessions take place in my Suffolk studio, where I have everything set up before you arrive. They tend to run two to three hours, though I never set a time limit. You’ll find more information, including rates and what’s included, on my website. As ever, if you’d like your portrait taken or have any questions, please get in touch.
