Celtic-Themed Model Portfolio Shoot with Leona at My Suffolk Studio

It was a real pleasure to have Leona back in the studio again recently for another collaborative model portfolio shoot. This time, we built the session around a Celtic-inspired theme, which gave us plenty of scope to explore character, styling, mood and expression in a way that still felt useful for her wider portfolio.

Leona was back in the UK from Gothenburg for the Easter holidays, where she is currently studying at university in Sweden, so it felt particularly nice to work together again while she was home. We have now worked on quite a few shoots together, and that familiarity always helps. When you have built up trust over time, it becomes much easier to experiment, develop ideas properly, and push a shoot a little further creatively without losing sight of the model’s comfort or the purpose of the images.

As always, Leona came to the studio with her mother, who accompanied her as chaperone. It was lovely to see them both again. I have said many times that I think chaperones are a positive part of the shoot process. They help create a more relaxed environment, they are useful when it comes to practical things like outfit adjustments, and most importantly they support the model. That matters.

Why collaboration matters in a model portfolio shoot

One of the things I value most in any portrait or model portfolio session is clarity. I am always guided by the model, their comfort level, and what they want to explore in the shoot. That is not just a preference for me. It is an important part of how I work.

I do not believe strong portrait photography comes from forcing ideas onto someone. It comes from collaboration, communication, and making sure everyone is clear on the direction of the session. When a model feels comfortable and involved in the process, the images nearly always become stronger. The expression feels more believable, the posing becomes more natural, and the whole shoot has a better sense of purpose.

That is one of the reasons working with Leona is always such a positive experience. She regularly brings new ideas and themes to the table, which gives us something fresh to build around. In this case, the Celtic theme gave us a visual thread running through the session, but it still left enough room for variety across the set.

Building a model portfolio with variety and purpose

A strong model portfolio should not feel one-dimensional. It needs variety, but it also needs coherence. There is a difference between simply wearing lots of outfits and actually building a body of work that shows range. For me, the best portfolio shoots are the ones that allow a model to explore different moods, styling choices and ways of presenting themselves, while still keeping the final set useful.

That is one of the reasons I think it is valuable for models, especially newer models, to keep expanding their portfolio and trying new ideas. That does not have to be with the same photographer every time. In fact, working with different photographers can be helpful because each person brings a different eye, a different approach to direction, and a different understanding of light and expression.

Trying new themes and approaches gives models the chance to learn what suits them, what they enjoy, and how they want to present themselves. It also helps them become more comfortable in front of the camera. A collaborative shoot can be a very good way to explore something new without feeling boxed in. That freedom can be useful, particularly when a model is still figuring out what kind of work best represents them.

The Celtic theme and how we approached it

For this shoot, the Celtic-inspired styling worked very well. Leona leaned into the concept beautifully, and the wardrobe choices helped give the session a distinct character without making it feel theatrical for the sake of it. The tartan fabrics, darker tones, layered styling and selected props all helped create a sense of mood and identity within the frame.

I have a few props at the studio that suited the look, and these helped give the set a little more shape and direction. Used carefully, props can strengthen a portrait. Used badly, they can distract from it. In this case, they supported the theme without overwhelming Leona’s presence in the frame, which is always the balance I am looking for.

What I liked most was that the styling gave us a strong starting point, but it did not limit the shoot. We were still able to create a range of images that felt relevant to a model portfolio rather than simply producing one repeated concept over and over again.

Working through different looks in the studio

We tried a number of different looks during the session, and that variety was important. Some images held much more strongly to the Celtic styling, while others moved into cleaner portrait territory. Towards the end, we also introduced a more editorial, fashion-led feel, which gave the set a nice shift in tone.

That progression is often how I like to work in the studio. We begin with a clear direction, get settled into the rhythm of the shoot, and then gradually open things out. Once the model is fully comfortable and the momentum is there, it becomes easier to experiment with expression, posture, framing and styling refinements.

In Leona’s case, that meant moving from the more themed portraits into images that felt more stripped back and fashion-aware. That balance is useful because it gives the portfolio more flexibility. Some images feel more stylised and narrative-led, while others are cleaner and more direct. Both have value.

Expression, styling and atmosphere

One of the strongest things Leona brings to a shoot is that she responds well to atmosphere. She is able to hold a look without forcing it, which makes a big difference in portrait photography. Whether the image is softer, more direct, or more editorial in feel, she gives me something real to work with.

The styling helped shape that atmosphere too. The tartan fabrics brought texture and visual weight, while the darker backdrop and controlled studio lighting gave the portraits a grounded, painterly quality. In some frames, the mood feels quiet and reflective. In others, it becomes firmer and more assertive. That variation is what helps stop a portfolio from becoming flat.

I also liked the contrast between the more layered Celtic-inspired outfits and the simpler looks later in the session. Stripping things back slightly often reveals a different side of the model, and that contrast can be very useful in a portfolio.

Why I value repeat collaborations

There is something very useful about working with the same person more than once. You are not starting from zero each time. You already understand a little more about how they move, how they respond to direction, what suits them, and what sort of energy they bring into the studio.

That does not mean repeating yourself. It means you can build on what has gone before.

With Leona, each shoot seems to add another layer. We are able to try different ideas and keep developing her portfolio in a way that feels thoughtful rather than random. For me, that is one of the real benefits of repeat collaborations. You can create work that has variety, but also direction.

A few words on professionalism and comfort

For me, the practical side of a shoot matters just as much as the final images. The model needs to know what the session is, what the boundaries are, and what we are trying to achieve. I think that is especially important when trying a concept-led shoot or introducing styling that is more character-driven.

That is why I always place so much importance on listening to the model and making sure the session is shaped around what they are comfortable doing. It avoids misunderstanding, it keeps the process professional, and it usually leads to better work. The strongest images tend to come when everyone is relaxed, clear, and working together properly.

That approach has been a consistent part of how I work across studio portrait photography, model portfolio sessions, headshots and personal branding photography here in Suffolk. The genre may change, but the principle does not.

Behind the scenes from the shoot

We also filmed a short behind the scenes video during the session, which is always nice to do when time allows. I think BTS footage can be useful because it shows a little of the process behind the final portraits and gives some context to how a shoot comes together in the studio.

Looking ahead to the next shoot

I always enjoy working with Leona, and this shoot was no exception. It gave us a chance to create something characterful and visually rich, while still adding a useful range to her portfolio. That balance matters to me. I want a creative shoot to feel creative, but I also want it to have purpose.

It was lovely to have her back in the studio while she was home from Sweden, and I am already looking forward to seeing her again when she is back in the UK for the summer break.

If nothing else, shoots like this are a good reminder that building a portfolio is not about chasing one perfect image. It is about developing range, confidence and experience over time. That process is where a lot of the value really sits.
