I recently had the pleasure of welcoming Sandra into the studio here at Bentwaters for a headshot and personal branding photo shoot. Sandra is a young professional working in London, and from the outset it was clear that this session needed to do more than produce a simple headshot. We wanted to create a set of images that reflected different parts of who she is, both professionally and personally.
That balance is something I always find interesting in personal branding photography. People are rarely just one thing. Sandra has a professional side that needed polished, approachable images suitable for LinkedIn and wider professional use, but she is also someone who takes her health and fitness seriously, so it made complete sense to include that as part of the shoot as well. Rather than forcing everything into one narrow visual style, we built a session around variety, purpose, and authenticity.
What we set out to achieve
The aim of this shoot was to create a strong and flexible set of photographs that Sandra could use across different platforms and in different contexts. Some images needed to feel clean, professional, and confident, particularly for LinkedIn and other work-related profiles. Others needed to feel more personal and lifestyle-led, showing a broader sense of character and energy. We also wanted to include fitness-focused portraits because that is a genuine part of Sandra’s life and identity.
For me, that is where personal branding photography becomes far more useful than a single standard portrait. It gives somebody a set of images that work across their digital presence rather than leaving them with one photograph expected to do everything.
What personal branding photography actually means
Personal branding is a phrase that gets used a lot, and sometimes a bit too loosely, but at its core it is fairly simple. It is about showing people who you are, how you work, and how you want to be perceived. For young professionals especially, that matters more now than it ever used to.
Whether somebody is applying for new roles, building a network, growing a business, or simply trying to present themselves clearly online, the photographs they use have a real impact. LinkedIn, company biographies, speaker profiles, professional directories, websites, and even social media all shape first impressions. A quick cropped phone photo or an outdated image often does not reflect where someone is now in their career.
A good personal branding shoot gives people control over that. It allows them to present themselves in a way that feels honest, current, and appropriate to their goals. It is not about pretending to be somebody else. It is about being intentional about how you are seen.
Why this matters for young professionals
For younger professionals in particular, I think this sort of photography can be genuinely valuable. Early in a career, people are often building credibility, trying to stand out for the right reasons, and finding ways to present themselves with confidence. That does not mean looking overly corporate or staged. It means having images that feel considered and professional without losing personality.
Sandra’s shoot is a good example of that. The cleaner headshot-style images give her something polished and approachable for professional use. The broader personal branding images give her more flexibility. The fitness portraits add another layer again, because they reflect a real part of her lifestyle rather than something invented for the sake of variety.
That honesty matters. I think people respond better to photographs when they feel believable.
Building the shoot around the client
One thing I feel strongly about is that the client should always have ownership over what they wear and what they bring to the studio. I am very happy to give guidance, and I do, but I never think it should become a situation where the client feels pushed into clothing or styling choices that do not feel like them.
In practice, the best results usually come when somebody feels comfortable in what they are wearing and understands why those choices work for the purpose of the shoot. My role is to help shape that, to advise where needed, and to use lighting, posing, and direction to bring everything together. The client’s role is to bring themselves into the session honestly.
That was very much the case here. By working within Sandra’s comfort level and allowing the wardrobe choices to reflect different sides of her personality, we were able to create a varied set of images that still felt coherent.
Starting with clean headshots and natural expressions
We began with the simpler headshot and portrait work. These kinds of images often look straightforward, but they rely on a lot of small details being right. Expression, posture, eye line, and subtle shifts in body position all make a difference. I usually keep the direction clear and calm during this stage of a shoot, particularly when the goal is to create something polished and approachable.
The cleaner portraits from this session have a professional feel to them, but they do not feel stiff. That is always important to me. A strong headshot should feel confident and direct, but still human. I want the person in front of the camera to look like themselves on a good day, not like they have been forced into a version of professionalism that does not suit them.
Sandra photographed very well in this environment. She brought a calm presence to the session, and that translated well in the final images.
Including fitness as part of the branding story
Once we had established the more traditional professional portraits, we moved into fitness looks. This was not a random change of direction. Sandra is genuinely very interested in fitness and healthy living, so it made sense to include that in the visual story.
That shift gave us the opportunity to create something with a bit more energy and physicality. The fitness portraits feel purposeful and confident, and they say something different from the headshots without feeling disconnected from the session as a whole. This is one of the real strengths of a well-planned personal branding shoot. It allows different parts of somebody’s life to sit alongside one another in a way that feels thoughtful rather than messy.
From a photographic point of view, these images also allowed us to play more with posture, stance, and shape. Stronger body language can work very well in branding photography when it reflects the person naturally. In Sandra’s case, it suited her.
Lifestyle portraits and a wider sense of personality
Alongside the fitness images, we also created lifestyle-style portraits with different outfits. These pictures sit somewhere between a headshot and a more styled portrait. They are useful because they offer flexibility. Not every photograph needs to feel corporate, and not every portrait needs to feel tightly formal.
Lifestyle-led branding images can be particularly useful across websites, social media, articles, and wider promotional content because they give a more rounded impression of the person. They can feel a little more open, a little more personal, and often more adaptable in design layouts as well.
This is why I often encourage people to think beyond just one image or one look when they are planning a personal branding session. The goal is not volume for the sake of it. The goal is to create a set of images that serve different purposes well.
Lighting, mood, and why variety matters
One of the things I enjoyed most about this session was the visual range we managed to build while still keeping everything consistent. Some of the portraits are bright, clean, and open, which works well for professional headshots and branding use. Others are moodier, with a darker background and a more sculpted feel to the light. That contrast gives the final gallery more depth.
I often think variety matters not because it looks impressive, but because it gives the client options that are genuinely practical. A bright, straightforward portrait might be perfect for LinkedIn or a company profile. A darker lifestyle portrait may be better suited to Instagram, editorial use, or a personal website. A fitness image might work well for broader branding or content around health and training.
Good variety is not about changing things for the sake of it. It is about matching the image to the purpose.
Collaboration in the studio
A shoot like this only works properly when there is a sense of collaboration. I can guide the session, shape the lighting, direct posing, and refine the details, but the best work always comes when the person in front of the camera is part of the process rather than simply being photographed.
Sandra was excellent to work with in that respect. She was open to direction, easy to work with, and brought a clear sense of herself to the session. That makes a real difference. It means the images feel more natural and less performed.
I think this is especially important in headshot and personal branding photography. People do not need to turn into models for the day. They simply need good guidance, a bit of space to settle into the process, and a session built around who they are.
Why I think this kind of shoot has real long-term value
One of the reasons I enjoy this type of photography is that it tends to have lasting value. A well-executed personal branding session can support somebody across multiple parts of their professional life. It can help them present themselves more clearly, look consistent across platforms, and feel more confident about the way they appear online.
That is particularly relevant now, when so much professional interaction begins digitally. Before somebody meets you, they may well have already seen your LinkedIn profile, your website, your Instagram page, or a company biography. The photographs attached to those places do some of the communication before a word is spoken.
That is why I think personal branding photography is worth taking seriously, especially for young professionals who are building momentum in their careers.
