Laurence and I have been following one another on social media for a while now so when he popped up saying he needed some headshots done I offered my services. Like me, Laurence loves social media, in particular Instagram, and is regularly posting on his feed. He knows the importance of good quality imagery and how this leaves a lasting impression on the viewer. Laurence is a theatre stage manager and set designer based in Ipswich, so perfectly located just down the road from my studio in Rendlesham. Before coming to the studio we talked about how it would be a fantastic opportunity to take some portraits as well. As a big fan of interesting tattoos, I thought it would be great to get some shots of Laurence showing some of his off. Amazingly he told me that at 60+ he’s only just started getting tattoos! Personally, I consider tattoos to be an art form and I have a bit of a fascination with them!
I always do two different lighting looks when it comes to headshots, a business look and a portrait look. This allows for maximum variation and provides the subject with an ‘image for all occasions’. It is important that headshots are kept minimal, simplicity is the key. This is because the viewer just wants to see your face, any unnecessary props or different backgrounds are fundamentally a distraction.
Laurence was a pleasure to work with and we had a very enjoyable shoot together. Headshot shoots currently cost £100 plus £30 for each edited digital image. This includes exclusive use of my studio which has changing and toilet facilities and ample parking. These sessions take around two hours but I never set a time limit so there is no pressure to get the job done, we can take our time and as a result, hopefully, get some fantastic images!
