Photography is more than just capturing faces; it tells stories, marks occasions, and conveys emotion. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Justyna and Karolina on a dual-themed studio portrait session at my photography studio in Bentwaters, Suffolk. This session combined two contrasting yet complementary concepts: a vibrant birthday celebration and an introspective fine art portrait. Each part of the shoot had a distinct vision, bringing together styling, set design, and expression to create a compelling visual narrative.
Part 1: Born in Style – A Nostalgic Birthday Tribute
The Concept
Milestone birthdays deserve more than just a party; they deserve to be immortalised in a stylish, nostalgic way. This themed shoot blended modern glamour with personal nostalgia, featuring metallic number balloons to represent the year of birth and a monochrome-inspired aesthetic with bold accents. The goal was to create a high-fashion yet celebratory atmosphere that felt both personal and striking.
Capturing these moments allowed us to highlight not only the joy of reaching a milestone but also the confidence and poise that come with it. The combination of contemporary styling and classic birthday elements resulted in images that feel both timeless and fashionable.
Styling & Wardrobe
The wardrobe selection played a critical role in defining the shoot’s aesthetic. Fashion, after all, is a major part of self-expression, and both models brought their unique styles to the set.
- Justyna and Karolina each embraced a distinctive look that reflected their personalities while maintaining a cohesive theme.
- One model adopted a playful, princess-inspired aesthetic, donning a voluminous black dress, a gold sash reading “Talk Thirty to Me,” and a delicate tiara for a sense of grandeur. The choice of black, contrasted with the gold sash, created a sophisticated yet fun visual dynamic.
- The second model took on a sleek and confident style with a fitted black leather dress, thigh-high boots, and a shimmering silver sash reading “Birthday Girl.” This edgier look exuded self-assurance and modern glamour.
Props & Set Design
The set was carefully designed to complement the theme while ensuring the focus remained on the subjects. A well-thought-out set design elevates any photoshoot, and this one was no exception.
- Large metallic balloon numbers (1995 and 1997) served as a strong visual anchor, instantly conveying the milestone being celebrated. These props were positioned to create depth in the images, ensuring they complimented the subjects rather than overpowering them.
- A minimalistic white backdrop kept the focus on the subjects while ensuring the colours and textures of the outfits and props stood out.
- Floating black, silver and white balloons added festive energy without overwhelming the composition. These elements introduced movement and vibrancy, enhancing the celebratory feel of the shoot.
Expression & Mood
- The session encouraged a dynamic range of expressions, from joyful celebration to poised confidence.
- The contrast of playful excitement and controlled elegance gave each image a sense of personality and empowerment.
- Natural expressions were encouraged, with the models interacting with their surroundings and playing with the props to create a relaxed, authentic atmosphere.
Lighting & Colour Palette
- The shoot maintained a monochromatic palette with touches of gold and silver, creating a polished and cohesive look.
- Soft, even lighting enhanced the contrast between the bold outfits and the clean white background, making each detail stand out.
- Strategic positioning of lights ensured the subjects were evenly illuminated, avoiding harsh shadows while maintaining depth and dimension.
Final Thoughts
This birthday portrait series beautifully combined nostalgia with fashion-forward photography, making it a perfect way to celebrate a milestone. The combination of statement styling, carefully selected props, and expressive posing resulted in a dynamic and engaging collection of images. Each photograph encapsulated both a sense of nostalgia and modern elegance, ensuring the subjects’ personalities shone through.
Part 2: “Encased” – The Fragility and Strength of Identity
The Concept
In stark contrast to the celebratory energy of the birthday shoot, the second concept, “Encased,” explored themes of identity, transformation, and self-perception. The idea revolved around the duality of vulnerability and strength, using crumpled brown paper as both a protective cocoon and a symbol of confinement.
This was a more conceptual and introspective session, one that invited interpretation. The contrast between delicate human form and rough, textured paper created a visually compelling narrative that spoke to the complexities of self-identity.
Visual Narrative
- The subject was wrapped in layers of textured brown paper, creating a sculptural effect that blurred the boundaries between the figure and the background.
- The organic folds and creases of the paper added an element of unpredictability, reinforcing the theme of transformation and emergence.
- The subject’s body became a part of the set itself, enveloped within the material, which suggested themes of concealment and metamorphosis.
Expression & Mood
- The model’s face, framed by the structured yet chaotic folds of paper, conveyed a serene yet introspective expression.
- This juxtaposition of softness against a raw, crumpled texture symbolised the delicate balance between protection and exposure.
- The sense of stillness in the poses enhanced the meditative, contemplative nature of the shoot.
Lighting & Colour Palette
- The lighting was intentionally controlled to highlight the intricate textures of the paper and cast subtle shadows that added depth and dimension.
- A warm, monochromatic colour palette gave the series a timeless, painterly quality, enhancing the conceptual depth of the shoot.
- Soft directional lighting sculpted the subject’s face and body, further emphasising the contrast between vulnerability and strength.
Interpretation & Meaning
- The imagery can be interpreted in various ways, reflecting themes of self-perception, societal expectations, and personal growth.
- The enveloping paper could represent barriers, both internal and external, that shape identity, while the subject’s calm gaze suggests resilience and quiet strength.
- The deliberate choice of material, simple, raw brown paper, echoes the idea of finding beauty in imperfection and embracing transformation.
This studio photoshoot successfully explored two vastly different yet complementary themes. The “Born in Style” series encapsulated celebration and self-expression, while “Encased” delved into introspection and transformation. Each session allowed Justyna and Karolina to showcase their personalities in different ways, creating a diverse and meaningful collection of portraits.
The ability of photography to capture both lighthearted joy and deep introspection is what makes portrait photography such a powerful art form. Whether commemorating a special occasion or engaging in a deeper artistic exploration, portrait photography continues to be a profound medium for storytelling and self-reflection.
