Creating a strong model portfolio requires diversity, style, and professional execution. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Sofie in my Suffolk-based studio for a captivating gothic punk-inspired portfolio shoot. Sofie’s professionalism, creativity, and strong visual presence made this session a remarkable one. A model’s portfolio is their visual résumé, showcasing their ability to transform, pose, and express emotions. A well-curated portfolio should feature a variety of styles, lighting setups, and expressions to highlight versatility. This session with Sofie demonstrates exactly that, combining alternative fashion, creative lighting, and dramatic backdrops to produce a visually compelling collection. This blog details the concept, wardrobe, lighting techniques, and posing strategies used in this shoot while offering tips for aspiring models on how to prepare for a professional portfolio session.

The Concept: Dark, Moody, and Versatile
Every model shoot begins with a concept. The aim was to create a series of images that align with Sofie’s aesthetic while showcasing her ability to switch between bold, alternative styles and classic elegance. The overarching theme was gothic punk, but I wanted to go beyond just one look. To create depth and variety, we incorporated elements of fashion editorial photography, portraiture, and fine art-inspired photography. This mix ensures that Sofie’s portfolio has images suited for different casting opportunities.

Why a Versatile Portfolio Matters
- Agencies and clients look for a range of different expressions, poses, and moods.
- A well-structured portfolio increases a model’s marketability.
- Creative styling and lighting show the ability to adapt to different fashion genres.
With that in mind, I planned several different looks, each telling its own story.

Studio Setup and Lighting Techniques
Lighting defines the mood of a portrait. Throughout the shoot, I used multiple lighting setups to achieve different effects: Clamshell Lighting – Used for beauty-style images, providing soft, even illumination with subtle shadows. Rembrandt Lighting – A dramatic, moody effect that creates depth and dimension. Side Lighting – Enhances texture, highlights clothing details, and sharpens features. Backlighting & Rim Light – Separates the subject from the background, adding a cinematic quality. By varying lighting techniques, we captured images that ranged from high-fashion editorials to gritty, alternative portraits. This approach ensures the portfolio is not one-dimensional, appealing to different styles of photography.

Technical Adjustments
To match the gothic punk aesthetic, I adjusted the light intensity and angles throughout the shoot. I also used a mix of hard and soft light sources to create visual contrast, enhancing the edgy look of the images.

Wardrobe and Styling Choices
Fashion plays a significant role in storytelling. Sofie’s wardrobe selections enhanced the punk-goth theme, with a mix of bold, alternative, and classic styles: Red and Black Leather Jacket – A statement piece that gave a rebellious, punk-inspired look. Black Lace and Satin Dress – Elegant yet gothic, adding contrast to the portfolio. Military-Style Jackets (Grey & Burnt Orange) – A structured, fashion-forward look. Deep Red Satin Gown with a Tiara – A gothic royalty-inspired outfit, elevating the drama of the session. Each outfit change transformed the atmosphere of the shoot, demonstrating Sofie’s ability to adapt her expressions and body language to suit different styles.

Posing and Expression: The Key to Engaging Portraits
A successful model knows how to communicate through body language and facial expressions. For Sofie’s shoot, we experimented with various styles of posing: Bold, direct eye contact – Perfect for creating a striking, high-impact portrait. Soft, contemplative expressions – Ideal for editorial and fine-art-inspired shots. Dynamic movements – Hair flips and fluid poses brought energy into some of the frames. Hand placement framing the face and body – Creating artistic compositions that guide the viewer’s eye. For new models, practising different poses in front of a mirror or studying professional editorials can help improve posing confidence.

Background Selection for Maximum Impact
The choice of background plays an essential role in setting the tone and feel of a shoot. I used various options to enhance the gothic punk atmosphere: Black backdrop – Classic and dramatic, perfect for high-contrast images. Warm brown tones – A softer, richer background for a vintage-inspired aesthetic. Muted grey with light streaks – Timeless and stylish, adding depth. Deep green-gold backdrop – Providing a regal feel for the gothic queen styling. Switching backgrounds gave us a mix of fashion-forward portraits and alternative conceptual images, again increasing the versatility of Sofie’s final portfolio.
The Role of Confidence and Comfort in a Model Shoot
Confidence translates directly into how a model appears on camera. Sofie’s ability to adapt, pose naturally, and interact with the camera made the session seamless. For models who are just starting:
Tips for Feeling Confident in a Photoshoot:
- Wear outfits that make you feel powerful – Confidence shines through when you feel comfortable in your clothing.
- Practice posing before the shoot – Knowing how your body moves reduces stiffness.
- Relax and breathe – Tension shows in photos. Staying loose helps create natural expressions.
- Communicate with the photographer – A good collaboration ensures the best shots are captured.
Sofie’s approachability and willingness to experiment helped create a diverse and visually striking series.
Final Thoughts: Why a Strong Portfolio is Essential
For any model, a professional portfolio is the key to securing opportunities in fashion, commercial, or editorial work. This session with Sofie demonstrated how styling, lighting, and expression come together to create compelling images.
Key Takeaways:
- Diversity in styling and posing is crucial.
- Lighting significantly impacts mood and storytelling.
- Confidence and creativity elevate a model’s presence.
- Working with an experienced photographer helps build a marketable portfolio.

I photograph musicians
Lauren is a singer and songwriter, and this shoot was made for her, not for a mood board. That is worth saying, because a lot of people find these images through the aesthetic and do not realise there is a working musician behind them.
Promo photography for musicians and bands is a regular part of what I do at the studio at Bentwaters. Press shots, artist portraits, band images, cover artwork and material for Spotify, socials and gig listings. A press shot has a job to do: it has to work as a small circle on a streaming profile and as a full-width banner on a venue website, and those are not the same photograph.
If you are a musician or in a band and want to talk about a shoot, the musician and band promo photography rates page covers what a session involves and what it costs.
