I recently welcomed Crystal to the studio for a portrait shoot built around simplicity and beauty. Crystal is great fun to work with, so the couple of hours we spent together flew by. We were after images that felt timeless and engaging, and I think we got there. We used no props, keeping the focus on Crystal and the images simple, and for the same reason I shot against a plain black background.
Crystal came to the studio with a chaperone, which I encourage on any shoot. A chaperone is usually a friend or family member who helps the sitter relax, and that tends to give more natural photos. There is often a lot of camaraderie between the sitter and their chaperone, and it is good to be part of that. Even when a portrait needs several people, hair stylists and make-up artists for example, there is always room for a chaperone, as my studio is big enough to cater for it. It is not a requirement, but I often suggest those posing for boudoir shoots bring someone along for that extra confidence boost.
Portrait shoots are becoming my favourite type of photography because they can be so varied. In the studio, Crystal’s portraits were relatively straightforward: I set up all the equipment beforehand and everything I need is to hand. There have been other times when I have been out in all weathers, working against the elements for that perfect set of images. I love that too, and the greater the challenge, the bigger the reward.
