Personal Branding Photography Shoot with Jessica at My Suffolk Studio

It was a real pleasure to welcome Jessica back to my studio for a second shoot. I always enjoy first sessions with new clients, but there is something particularly rewarding about a return visit. By the time someone comes back for a second shoot, there is already trust in place. They know how I work, they know the environment, and they arrive with a stronger sense of confidence.

That was certainly the case with Jessica.

From the moment she arrived, it was clear how much she had grown since our last session together. Her confidence had come on leaps and bounds, and that always makes a difference in front of the camera. A professional studio can feel slightly daunting at first. There are lights, backdrops, and a camera pointed directly at you, often in an environment that feels unfamiliar. That is perfectly normal. One of the real advantages of a second shoot is that the uncertainty has already started to disappear. Clients settle into the space much more quickly, and the whole session begins to feel more natural.

A Personal Branding Shoot with Two Clear Purposes

This shoot had two very clear aims. Jessica needed professional headshots and profile pictures for her business use, but there was also an opportunity to create more model portfolio-style images at the same time. That balance made the session especially productive because it meant we could create photographs for her professional life while also giving her strong, versatile content for her modelling platforms.

Jessica is a professional photographer specialising in newborn and family portraits, and she also enjoys modelling. Because of that, I knew this session would naturally have two parts. We needed polished and approachable branding photographs that would work well for her business presence, particularly for her Facebook profile image, while also building a set of more varied portraits to support her modelling portfolio.

I always feel it is a real compliment when another photographer entrusts me with their headshot and personal branding photography. Photographers understand what goes into a strong portrait. They know the importance of light, expression, direction, and consistency. That trust is never something I take lightly.

What Personal Branding Photography Really Means

Personal branding photography is about much more than simply taking a nice headshot. It is about creating a set of images that represents a person properly in their professional world. These photographs need to communicate who they are, how they work, and the impression they want to give to others.

A strong branding session should produce images that feel credible, approachable, professional, and consistent. These are the sorts of photographs that can be used across a website, social media, profile pictures, business pages, interviews, and promotional material. Rather than relying on one single image, personal branding photography gives someone a library of photographs that helps them show up consistently wherever their audience finds them.

That does not mean every frame needs to look formal. In fact, some of the strongest branding sessions include a range of close headshots, mid-length portraits, full-length photographs, and images that feel a little more relaxed or observational. Clothing, props, expressions, posture, and framing all contribute to that visual identity.

In Jessica’s case, the final photographs needed to work across both her business and modelling presence. That required thought and variety. The images had to feel professional and polished, but they also needed enough flexibility to support more than one use.

Maximising Five Distinct Looks

One of the key aims of this session was to maximise five distinct looks. That sort of variety is important when the final images are going to be used across multiple platforms. A business profile picture needs something slightly different from a modelling portfolio image, and a good personal branding session should reflect that.

We worked through a range of outfits and carefully chosen props, creating a versatile set of full-body portraits as well as tighter headshot-style photographs. This allowed Jessica to leave with a broad gallery rather than a collection of images that all felt too similar. I always think carefully about practical use during a branding session. Most clients do not just need one good photograph. They need several strong images that can work across different parts of their business and online presence without everything feeling repetitive.

That is where planning and variation make such a difference.

Jessica brought a strong sense of purpose to the session, which helped enormously. Clear communication always improves a shoot. It allows me to tailor the lighting, composition, and overall approach to match how the images will actually be used, while still leaving room for natural moments and expressions that often become favourites.

Why a Second Shoot Often Works So Well

I often find that second shoots are where clients really begin to relax and show their personality more naturally. The first session is often about settling nerves, understanding the environment, and building trust. Even when a first shoot goes very well, there is usually some degree of hesitancy at the beginning. That is completely normal.

By the second session, much of that has gone. Clients know what to expect, they understand that I will guide them properly, and they feel more comfortable stepping in front of the camera. That confidence comes through in the finished images.

That was very much the case with Jessica. She looked more assured, more relaxed, and more confident throughout this session. That translated directly into the photographs. Her expressions felt stronger, her poses were more natural, and there was a clear sense that she was comfortable in each look we created.

That level of ease is important. Personal branding photography works best when the subject looks like themselves, only at their best.

Why This Shoot Worked So Well

This session worked because it had a clear purpose, but also enough flexibility to create range. Jessica needed photographs that could support her professional work as a photographer while also helping her build her modelling portfolio. Those are two related but slightly different goals, and it was important that the shoot recognised both.

Because Jessica understands photography herself, there was also a strong sense of collaboration throughout the session. She knew the importance of getting variety, and she came prepared to make the most of the time in the studio. That meant we could move efficiently through the different looks while still giving each one enough attention.

At the same time, being a photographer does not necessarily make it easy to be photographed. Quite often it can be harder, because you are fully aware of what is happening on the other side of the camera. That is another reason I appreciated her trust in me.

Behind the Scenes from the Shoot

I also filmed a short behind-the-scenes video during the session. I think behind-the-scenes content is genuinely useful because it gives people a clearer sense of what a professional studio shoot actually looks like. It helps show the lighting, the working process, and the atmosphere of the session in a way that final stills alone cannot.

I always appreciate feedback like that, especially when it reflects the full experience of the session rather than just the final images. For me, that matters just as much. A good shoot should feel clear, relaxed, and purposeful from start to finish.

Final Thoughts

This was a really strong session and a very good example of how personal branding photography can overlap with portfolio work when the shoot is properly planned. Jessica needed headshots, profile pictures, and a wider set of branding images for professional use, while also building content for her modelling platforms. By approaching the session with both purposes in mind, we were able to create a gallery with real range and practical value.

Most of all, it was simply good to work with Jessica again. Seeing somebody return to the studio with more confidence, more clarity, and a better sense of how they want to be photographed is always one of the most rewarding parts of the job. I am very pleased with what we created together, and I look forward to working with her again.
