Recently I had the privilege of taking some professional headshots for renowned writer and broadcaster Paul Heiney. Paul is a charismatic chap, who was a pleasure to work with from start to finish.
As a seasoned professional he was a natural in front of the camera. Paul also has a great story. He began his broadcasting career in 1978 at the BBC, he has written on many farming matters, using his experience as a pioneer of traditional farming. He successfully farmed 40 acres of Suffolk countryside using our famous Suffolk Punch horses instead of tractors. He also spent 7 years on the consumer affairs programme Watchdog. He has over a dozen books credited to him, both fiction and nonfiction; for young and older readers alike, so as you can imagine, we had plenty to talk about!
The photos were shot on location at Southwold harbour. Paul is very keen yachtsman – in 2005 he single handedly sailed across the Atlantic – so we felt that the harbour was a fitting location. Adding a location that has a connection to you is a great way of showing some personality which will ensure that people remember you.
Whether you’re an actor a CEO or just have your own Facebook page you know that headshots are essential when it comes to representing yourself the way you. Think about it for a minute, if you went online to research a company you wanted to do business with, and they had a poor quality or badly lit photo would they go down in your estimation?
Not everyone is a natural in front of the camera, a professional will have the know how to be able to coach you through your photo shoot. They can work with your best angles, find the correct lighting to flatter your facial structure and put you at ease.
Find a good photographer. A good quality headshot is an absolute must. Take a look at my portfolio here and get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
