I recently photographed Justyna at my studio at Bentwaters near Woodbridge, Suffolk, for another round of portfolio work. We have been building her model portfolio together for a few years now, and sessions like this are always a reminder that progress is not just about “better photos”. It is also about trust, comfort, and learning what suits you as a model.
This shoot had six distinct looks, all selected and styled by Justyna. That matters. A model portfolio should be led by the model’s goals, boundaries, and taste, not by a photographer trying to force a concept. My job is to shape the light, guide the posing, and keep the session steady and safe. The creative choices still belong to the person in front of the camera.
It was also lovely to have Karolina with us as Justyna’s chaperone. A supportive third person changes the energy in a good way. It keeps the room relaxed, adds a bit of humour, and helps the model feel grounded. It also makes practical things easier, like quick outfit changes, prop handling, and keeping an eye on small details.
All images from this session are safe for work, which is how I prefer to run these shoots. You can create strong, bold, fashion-led work without crossing lines that do not feel right for the model, or for how they want to present themselves professionally.
Justyna’s words on confidence, body image, and showing up anyway
One thing I respect about Justyna is that she speaks openly about confidence in a way that feels real. She shared this after seeing the final images:
“I haven’t been happy with how my body looks for some time now. Life gets busy, mental health is wobbly, and working physically doesn’t seem to help. But I’m happy with how those pictures look. I’m not perfect, but perfect is overrated! Let’s embrace all the rolls, bumps and insecurities 🥰”
That is the truth for a lot of people, models included. Confidence is not a straight line. It comes and goes. And it often has nothing to do with how you look, and everything to do with what life is doing to you at the time.
A well-run photo shoot does not “fix” confidence. It can, however, give you evidence. It can show you that you photograph well, even on days when you do not feel great. It can also teach you that your body is not the problem. The problem is usually the pressure to look a certain way in a world that edits everything.
If you are dealing with low mood, anxiety, or body image issues, I always point people towards proper support. Why professional photographers can help with confidence (without pretending it’s magic)
When someone says, “I look awful in photos,” I normally translate that as, “I have not seen myself photographed with flattering light, good lens choice, and calm direction.”
There are a few practical reasons professional shooting can feel different:
First, posing is taught, not guessed. Most people default to stiff posture, tense hands, and awkward head angles. Direction fixes that fast. Small changes to chin position, shoulder angle, weight shift, and hands can make a big difference.
Second, light is everything. If you are lit from above with hard shadows, or with a phone flash from straight on, you will not like the result. Controlled studio lighting shapes the face and body with intention. It can be soft and kind, or sharp and graphic. Either way, it is deliberate.
Third, you get time. Most “bad photos” are rushed. A proper shoot has space to settle, test, adjust, and repeat. That time reduces self-consciousness, which shows in the expression.
Finally, you get consistency. A portfolio is not meant to look like six unrelated selfies. It needs a coherent standard of quality across different looks.
None of this is about chasing perfection. It is about helping someone look like themselves, on a good day, with care.
The role of a chaperone and why I welcome it
Karolina’s presence improved the day, and I see that often. A chaperone is not about mistrust. It is about comfort and choice.
A chaperone can help in a few ways:
They reduce pressure. If a model is nervous, having someone familiar nearby helps them relax.
They support boundaries. If a model wants to check something, discuss an outfit, or take a break, it is easier to do that with a supportive person there.
They help with practical details. Clothing adjustments, jewellery, hair, props, checking straps, spotting creases. It all adds up.
They keep the energy positive. Shoots are better when there is laughter and encouragement in the room.
Chaperones are welcome at my studio, whether the model is 18 or 48. Comfort is not just an age thing.
Six looks, one clear goal: variety that still feels consistent
“Variety” in a portfolio is not chaos. It is controlled range.
For this session, the goal was simple: give Justyna six looks that show different styling, different mood, and different posing language, while keeping the lighting clean and the work professional.
Here is how each look played out.
Look 1: Red headscarf, cat-eye sunglasses, classic red lip
This set leans into a bold, graphic style that reads instantly. The red scarf frames the face and creates strong shape around the cheeks and jawline. The black cat-eye sunglasses add attitude and a touch of retro fashion energy, while the red lip locks the palette together.
What I like about this look is how decisive it is. There is no visual dithering. Red, black, and clean skin tones. That clarity makes it useful for a portfolio because it shows Justyna can carry a strong styling choice without it wearing her.
Posing here works best when it stays simple. Hand-to-face shapes, slight head turns, and controlled expression. The sunglasses do a lot of the storytelling. Over-posing would fight the look, so we kept it minimal and deliberate.

Look 2: White crop top with braces and jeans, arms raised pose
This look shifts the energy. It is cleaner, more body-led, and more modern. The white top keeps the upper body simple, while the braces add vertical lines that help shape the frame. The jeans and visible waistband keep the styling grounded and everyday, but still intentional.
The raised-arm pose is a confidence choice. It can look awkward fast if the shoulders rise or the hands tense. With good direction, it becomes elegant and statuesque. We focused on length through the torso, relaxed wrists, and a calm gaze.
The background stays plain and bright, which helps this set feel like “clean portfolio” rather than “concept”. It is also a good reminder that you do not need elaborate props to make a strong image. The body language is the point.

Look 3: Black long-sleeve bodysuit with red tights
This is one of the strongest graphic looks of the day. Black on top, red on the legs. It is simple, but it reads powerfully.
The bodysuit creates a clean silhouette and keeps the torso uninterrupted. The red tights bring bold colour and a fashion feel that is slightly theatrical without becoming costume. The look works because the styling is tight and the lines are clean.
For posing, we kept the structure strong. Hands on hips, squared shoulders, and direct eye contact. This kind of styling supports confident stance and assertive expression. If you soften it too much, the look loses its punch.

Look 4: White shirt, black bandeau, ripped jeans, chair pose
This set brings in a prop, and props change everything. A chair gives you levels, angles, and tension points. It also gives the model something physical to work with, which helps reduce self-consciousness.
The styling here is relaxed, slightly undone, and modern. The white shirt adds movement and texture. The bandeau keeps the look clean. The jeans add edge. It feels casual, but it is still shaped.
The chair pose, with one foot up and hands in the hair, is a great way to show control. It can easily become messy. We kept it structured by watching the spine line, keeping hands intentional, and managing the shirt so it looks effortless rather than chaotic.
Portfolio value: prop confidence, casual fashion styling, and varied body shape work without relying on heavy concepts.
Look 5: White shirt, tartan tie, red glasses, leather trousers
This look plays with a “styled character” feeling without turning into fancy dress. The red glasses are a statement. The tartan tie brings pattern and colour that connects with the glasses. The leather trousers shift the look into something sharper and more fashion-led.
What matters here is expression. If the expression is too playful, it becomes novelty. If it is too hard, it can feel closed off. We aimed for composed and direct, with small changes in chin angle and eye line.
This set also works well for half-length and three-quarter framing, because the tie and collar details carry visual interest without needing full-body stance in every shot.

Look 6: Darker set, black blazer styling with handbag, mood lighting
The final set steps away from the bright, white background feel and moves into something moodier. The light is more directional, the shadows have more presence, and the overall tone feels more cinematic.
The blazer styling brings a grown-up fashion vibe, and the handbag adds a luxury cue and gives the hands a job. This is important. Hands are often the first place nerves show up. A prop like a bag gives structure and purpose.
In this set, we played with softer expression, neck line, and a slightly slower posing pace. Everything in mood lighting looks better when the model moves with control. Small changes read big.

What this session adds to Justyna’s portfolio
Across these six looks, Justyna gets a useful spread:

Most importantly, the set feels coherent. It looks like the same person, shot with consistent technical quality, across different moods.
That is what a portfolio needs to do. It needs to show range without losing identity.
A note on “safe for work” and professional portfolio choices
I am careful about where the line sits for each model. “Safe for work” is not a single rule. It is a shared agreement about comfort, intent, and how the images will be used.
For Justyna, this session stayed on the right side of bold. Strong styling, confident posing, and clear fashion intent, without leaning into anything explicit.
That balance matters if a model wants their work to be usable across agencies, castings, and professional platforms. It also matters for personal comfort. If someone feels exposed, it will show in their expression and posture. Confidence is easier to photograph when the model feels in control.
Closing thoughts
I always enjoy working with Justyna. Not because the shoots are “easy”, but because they are honest. She turns up as herself. She tries things. She takes direction. She chooses styling that suits her. And she allows space for the reality that confidence can wobble, even when you look strong.
This shoot is another solid step in a longer portfolio journey. A few years of consistent work builds depth. It shows growth. It also gives you a body of images that you can use with pride, even when your inner voice is not being kind.
