I am Bob Foyers, a commercial photographer based at Bentwaters near Woodbridge, Suffolk. Over the years I have worked with a lot of talented people, and this project brought a few of them together for an Arabian-themed portfolio shoot with makeup artist Courtney from @SweetFX.
Courtney and I have collaborated several times and the rapport is easy. She is a skilled makeup artist with a serious work ethic, and this time we settled on a loosely Arabian theme built around one idea: making the eyes the focus of every frame.
For the model we brought in Roma, a singer-songwriter, performer and model from Ipswich. Her single “Love Letters” has been played on BBC radio, and she was writing new material for the summer festivals, including First Light in Lowestoft in June. You can follow her at @romasworlduk.
We also had fellow photographer Adrian (@nite.eyz) on board, who is excellent at light painting. His technique gave the images depth and a touch of mystery that ordinary studio lighting would not have reached.
Courtney worked bold colours, intricate designs and layered textures around the eyes, all chosen to sit with the Arabian theme. We then planned the lighting and composition so the makeup carried each shot, with Adrian’s light painting adding movement behind it.
Roma held it all together. Her ability to convey emotion through her gaze is exactly what the concept needed, and it let the makeup and the light do their work.
The shoot is a good example of what happens when a makeup artist, a light painter and a photographer pull in the same direction. My thanks to Courtney, Roma and Adrian for their part in it. You can see more of this kind of work in my portraits portfolio.
If you have an idea for a themed shoot or want to update a portfolio, get in touch and we can talk it through.
