Commercial photography throws up an enormous variety of work, and that’s a big part of why I enjoy it. Every shoot is different and brings its own problems to solve. A recent one was a good example: Edward King of Anglo-Spanish Imports asked me to photograph a pair of Spanish shotguns.
Anglo-Spanish Imports brings some of the finest Spanish shotguns into the UK. It’s not a trade I knew much about, and the twin guns I was asked to photograph were really something. Photographing them, though, was far from straightforward. The polished stocks and finely etched engravings needed real care and attention.
Lighting the detail
Every part of the guns brought its own challenge, and each needed lighting just so to bring out the smallest details. It was demanding work, but the sort I enjoy. By adjusting the lighting and working through every angle, I came away with a set of images that did the guns justice.
I was especially keen to bring out the handcrafted engravings on the metalwork, which say a lot about the craftsmanship in each gun. So I took particular care over the play of light and shadow across those surfaces, so you can see the depth and detail of the work.
Working with Edward was a pleasure. His knowledge of the trade was invaluable, and his enthusiasm was catching. He was on hand throughout, with plenty of stories and insight into his world, and I’m very pleased with how the final images came out.
Looking back, it was a project that stretched me and gave me a fresh angle on my work. That’s what keeps the job rewarding: the learning, the new problems and the chance to work with people like Edward.
For anyone who doesn’t know me, I’m Bob Foyers, a commercial photographer based in Suffolk. I work as Foyers Photography from Bentwaters, near Woodbridge. I’ve spent years learning my trade, and I still look forward to whatever comes next. Edward King and his Spanish shotguns were a fine addition to the portfolio.
