Every shoot is different, and maternity sessions hold a special place for me. Recently I had the pleasure of a maternity studio session with Ines at my studio, Foyers Photography at Bentwaters.
Ines arrived with plenty of ideas and outfits, ready to mark this stage of her life. My aim was simple, natural and beautiful portraits that reflect this time.
Drawing on classical painting, I used a good deal of chiaroscuro, the bold contrast between light and dark, to give the portraits a timeless, elegant feel. It suited Ines and the mood we were after.
Ines was a joy to work with. Her natural grace made the session easy, and she brought her mother-in-law along as a chaperone, which helped everything run smoothly.
As Ines was near the end of her pregnancy, comfort mattered most, so I kept the studio warm and relaxed throughout.
A maternity shoot is a lovely way to mark the start of your baby’s journey. Around the 34th week tends to work well, once the early discomforts have passed and the bump is showing, though the timing can always suit you.
My studio offers a range of backgrounds and controlled lighting. You’re welcome to bring your own outfits, a statement dress with floaty material works beautifully, or to keep it natural. Partners are always welcome too, since this is a shared journey.
The portraits from Ines’ session were a celebration of the months ahead, images she and her family can keep. You can see more of my work on the portraits portfolio.
Sessions like this are a real privilege, and I’m always glad to capture these moments as warmly as I can.
