One of the most engaging aspects of portrait photography is its ability to bring to life a myriad of narratives, personalities, and emotions. This potential becomes truly exhilarating when a photograph transcends its medium to intersect with other art forms.
In the second instalment of my two-part personal project, I took inspiration from the magnificent works of John Singer Sargent, a revered American painter celebrated for his exquisite depiction of his subjects. Born in 1856, Sargent quickly rose to prominence with his unrivalled skill to capture the grandeur, grace, and subtle intimacies of his subjects.
My initial inspiration emerged from Sargent’s arresting portrait of ‘Dr Pozzi at Home’, a piece that emanates an imposing sense of gravitas, something I sought to replicate with my model, Craig, in my previous blog post.
This recent endeavour, however, was sparked by another masterpiece from Sargent – ‘Madame X’. I stumbled upon the intriguing story of this painting while exploring ‘Great Art Explained‘, an enlightening YouTube channel.
‘Madame X‘ is Sargent’s controversial portrayal of Madame Pierre Gautreau, a Louisiana-born socialite known for her beauty and charm in Parisian high society. Gautreau’s magnetic persona and distinctive appearance made her a fascinating subject for many artists. Sargent’s portrayal, however, remains the most notorious, drawing scandal and criticism for its time.
‘Madame X’ features Gautreau in a provocative black satin dress, her skin pallid against the dark fabric, her pose – an unusual one with a dropped shoulder strap – suggestive and daring. Despite the initial outrage, the painting has since been acknowledged as a masterful portrayal of Gautreau’s alluring aura.
When I contemplated recreating this captivating artwork, one person instantly came to mind – Polly. A dear friend and a natural beauty, Polly possesses a radiant charm that effortlessly mirrors the intrigue Gautreau exudes in the painting. Her personality seemed to resonate with Gautreau’s spirit, making her an ideal model for this project.
While the aim was to reflect the essence of ‘Madame X’, it was essential that our portrait embodied our distinct interpretation. Polly’s unique charm added a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’, leading us to the creation of a photograph inspired by, yet distinct from, the original.
The first image of our triptych draws upon the painting’s composition, followed by two additional frames that build on the narrative. We sought to convey the grace and elegance inherent in Sargent’s work, which was once scandalously misinterpreted as loose morals due to the fallen strap of Gautreau’s dress. To echo the adjustment Sargent had to make post-scandal, we too painted our photograph with careful attention to detail.
The intriguing connections between Gautreau and Dr Pozzi – both their real-life relationship and the striking resemblance in Sargent’s paintings of the two – further inspired me to perceive and present these two photographic recreations as a pair.
Polly’s grace, Craig’s charisma, and the invaluable effort of everyone involved brought this personal project to life. A humble attempt to recreate the magic of Sargent’s paintings in our Suffolk studio, this endeavour truly exemplifies the incredible narrative power of portrait photography.
As we continue to explore and experiment with this medium, we hope to share more of such exciting projects that blend photography with art, history, and stories that transcend time.
