There’s an old adage that says “A picture is worth a thousand words,” and in today’s digital world, this has never been truer. I recently had the pleasure of conducting a third photoshoot with the talented dressmaker Amy from Chrystalist Costume Design. Unlike our previous collaborations where models donned her creations, this time Amy decided to model her dress herself. And why, you ask? Because Amy is revamping her business, charting a new course, and her choice of modelling her design was not just symbolic, but strategic.
Amy is not just a fantastic dress designer; she’s also a phenomenal model, bringing her unique creative vision to life in front of the lens. Our recent shoot bore testimony to this, brimming with infectious energy, resulting in captivating imagery.
Amy’s decision to wear her design was a conscious move, embodying her business’s evolution and her commitment to a new venture. She’s spearheading a novel line of clothing, all created by recycling and upscaling pre-loved outfits. Her mission? To weave sustainability into the very fabric of her business, either by reimagining old outfits or repurposing materials.
My experience as a professional photographer has repeatedly reaffirmed the importance of great imagery for businesses, especially those with an online presence. Companies that leverage websites and social media to promote themselves need high-quality visuals to stand out from the crowd. Not only do these visuals capture attention, but they also communicate brand stories, values, and propositions. They create an emotional connection with potential customers, transforming browsers into buyers and followers into advocates.
As a fashion photographer, I revel in the opportunity to work on shoots like this. They challenge the norms, push boundaries, and often result in groundbreaking visuals. Amy’s shoot was no different. The images we captured not only showcased Amy’s design prowess and modelling potential but also encapsulated the essence of her new business direction.
Having worked in luxury handmade burlesque and cabaret costuming for the past five years, Amy’s brand has always been about slow fashion. With her sister brand Chrystalist Revamps, she’s pushing the envelope further. By incorporating upcycling, recycling, and refashioning into her manufacturing processes, she’s not only advocating for sustainable fashion but also striving to reduce the alarming volume of textiles going into landfill.
