The Southwold Sausage Walk brings dachshunds and their owners together from all over the UK. It is more than a fun day out. The walk raises money for the charity Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD, and since it began in 2017 it has grown into a firm favourite among dachshund owners, raising over £10,000 for the cause. The day usually draws between 300 and 500 dachshunds and their owners, with stalls, raffles, food vendors and a DJ to keep things lively.
The Purpose Behind the Walk
The walk is a community effort behind a cause that means a great deal to the people who take part. Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD supports dachshunds affected by Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a spinal condition that is common in the breed. The funds raised go straight to the charity, helping provide care, treatment and support for dachshunds living with this difficult condition.
My Involvement in the Southwold Sausage Walk
When Laura, the event’s founder, asked me to provide promotional photography for the walk, I was glad to put my skills towards such a worthwhile cause. Pet photography is a real passion of mine, and the chance to capture the character of so many dachshunds in a fun setting was one I jumped at. Being part of it let me support the charity and spend time with a community of owners who clearly adore their dogs.
Challenges and Joys of Pet Photography
Pet photography brings its own challenges. The shoot is always led by the dogs, giving them time to settle and get used to the studio. That usually means a few investigative sniffs of my equipment, just to check everything is in order from the dachshunds’ point of view. I always ask owners to bring treats, toys, or even their pet’s bed, so the space feels as familiar and comfortable as possible.
The reward is in catching those spontaneous, playful moments that show what a dog is really like. Each dachshund has its own character, and my job is to let that individuality come through in every frame. A playful tilt of the head or a curious glance at the camera is exactly what makes this work so enjoyable.
The Upcoming Beach Photoshoot
Looking ahead, I am keen on a photoshoot planned for the beach at Southwold. As much as I enjoy the studio, there is something good about getting out by the coast. Photographing dachshunds on the sand, with the Southwold shoreline behind them, is something I am really looking forward to.
As is often the way with outdoor work, we are at the mercy of the weather. So far our great British summer has not played ball, but I am hopeful the sun will turn up soon and give us a good day for it.
The Impact of the Southwold Sausage Walk
The walk’s effect reaches well beyond the event itself. It has built a strong sense of community among dachshund owners and raised real money for a charity making a difference to dachshunds with IVDD. The hard work of the organisers, Laura, Stuart and Sarah, keeps the walk a highlight in the calendar for dachshund lovers across the UK.
Looking Forward to Future Events
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the team has been unable to host events for the past 18 months. With restrictions easing, we are all hopeful the 9th event can go ahead in October. There is plenty of anticipation, and no doubt this year’s walk will be every bit as good as the ones before it.
How to Get Involved
