Studio Portrait Photography with Vaiva, Suffolk

I recently had Vaiva back in the studio for another portrait session, and this shoot was a very good example of why I always value variety in a studio setting. When a session is planned well, it is possible to create much more than a handful of simple portraits. In one shoot, we can produce clean headshots, more polished beauty-style images, darker editorial portraits, and full-length fashion-led photographs that all feel connected while still offering something different.

That is exactly what this session with Vaiva gave us.

Vaiva is wonderful to photograph. She is confident in front of the camera, comfortable with direction, and brings a strong sense of style to a shoot. That makes a real difference because it allows us to move through different looks and moods without the images ever feeling forced. Everything still feels like part of the same session, but each set has its own identity.

A big part of what made this shoot work so well was the brilliant hair and makeup styling. Andzelika Kurek, Bridal Makeup Artist Norwich MUA, did a wonderful job with Vaiva’s makeup, creating a look that photographed beautifully across each outfit and lighting setup without ever feeling overdone. Heidi also did an excellent job with the hair styling. The finish was polished, flattering, and versatile enough to carry us from clean headshots through to the more fashion-led and editorial portraits. Good styling always makes a difference in front of the camera, and on this shoot both Andzelika and Heidi helped bring the whole session together beautifully.

Why variety matters in a studio portrait session

One of the biggest advantages of a studio portrait session is control. I can keep the lighting clean and consistent, use a neutral background, and then build variety through styling, posing, framing, and expression. That means the images can shift in feel quite dramatically without needing to change locations.

For me, that is one of the most useful things about studio portrait photography. A single session does not need to produce only one type of image. It can move from professional, direct headshots into something more dramatic and editorial, depending on what the person wants from the shoot.

That range is particularly helpful for anyone who wants more than one use from their photographs. Some people need polished portraits that feel approachable and straightforward. Others also want images with more attitude, more shape, and a stronger fashion influence. There is no reason a good studio shoot cannot do both.

Starting with clean, direct portraits

We started with some simpler headshot-style portraits. These images are important because they create a strong foundation for the session. Clean framing, direct eye contact, and controlled lighting allow the focus to stay exactly where it should be, on the person.

With Vaiva, those tighter portraits work especially well because her features are strong and expressive, and her red hair immediately gives the images a clear visual identity. Even when the styling is simple, there is still a lot of impact in the frame. That is often what makes a good headshot or portrait work. It does not need to be overcomplicated. It just needs good light, a strong expression, and a sense of presence.

Building stronger fashion and editorial looks

As the session progressed, we moved into more fashion-led portraits. This is where the shoot really opened up visually. The different outfits changed the mood of the images significantly, while the simple studio setup kept everything cohesive.

The red faux-fur jacket with the green dress created one of the boldest looks of the session. Visually, it is striking straight away. The contrast between the rich red and the cooler green works beautifully, and Vaiva’s hair ties the whole frame together. Those portraits feel glamorous, confident, and full of character. They have a stronger fashion influence, but they still keep the focus on expression and shape rather than relying on gimmicks.

That is always what I am looking for in a portrait session. Styling should enhance the image, not overpower it. In this case, the wardrobe brought energy and colour, but the photographs still feel like portraits first.

Using darker styling for a different mood

The black lace outfit and leather jacket took the session in a different direction again. These images feel darker, more editorial, and slightly more cinematic in tone. They are still photographed on a simple studio background, but the clothing, posture, and expression shift the mood immediately.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy portrait sessions like this so much. Small changes can have a huge impact. You do not need a completely different set or location to create a new feeling in the images. A change of outfit, a different stance, and a more restrained expression can completely alter the result.

With Vaiva, these darker portraits worked especially well because she carried the look naturally. Nothing about the images feels overdone. There is confidence in them, but there is also control, which is often what makes editorial-style portraits feel stronger.

Expression, movement and personality

That was very much the case here. Some frames feel poised and self-contained, while others have movement and energy. The more playful styling with fringe and red accessories brought another layer to the shoot, giving us images that felt lighter and more fashion-focused without losing the consistency of the overall session.

This is often where a portrait gallery becomes more interesting. It starts to show different sides of the same person rather than delivering the same image over and over again.

Why studio portrait photography works so well for this kind of shoot

A lot of people think studio photography is limited, but I have always felt the opposite. When done properly, the studio gives you freedom. It strips away distractions and lets the person, the styling, and the lighting do the work.

I always enjoy working with Vaiva, and this shoot was a great reminder of how effective a well-planned studio portrait session can be. With the right styling, good communication, and a willingness to explore a few different ideas, it is possible to create a gallery that feels both cohesive and varied.

For me, that is where studio portrait photography is at its strongest. It is not just about taking a nice photograph. It is about creating a set of images that work together, show range, and still feel true to the person in front of the camera.
