I have worked with Natalie a number of times now, and she is always an absolute joy to photograph. She is an alternative and fashion model from Norwich, Norfolk, and every time she comes into the studio, we manage to create something with a slightly different feel while still building on the trust and understanding that comes from working together more than once.
This latest session was all about versatility within a strong visual identity. We wanted to create a set of headshots and portraits that would strengthen her model portfolio while also leaning into the darker, more fashion-led side of her look. The result was a shoot that felt bold, alternative, polished, and expressive, with a clear thread running through the whole set.
What I like about these images is that they never feel forced. There is attitude in the styling, confidence in the posing, and a darker studio mood running through the work, but the images still feel controlled and professional. For me, the set sits somewhere between clean model portfolio work, edgy editorial portraiture, and alternative fashion photography.
Building Variety Into a Studio Portrait Session
One of the most important things in any studio portrait session is variety. That does not mean trying to create ten completely unrelated looks just for the sake of it. It means producing a body of work that feels consistent, but still shows range.
That was very much the aim with this shoot.
Across the session, we created clean headshots, polished portraits, stronger fashion-led frames, and darker editorial images with more atmosphere. Some of the photographs feel crisp and studio-based against a simpler background, while others lean more into mood and drama through the use of shadow, colour, and contrast. That balance is important, particularly for a model portfolio, because it shows not just what someone looks like, but how they can carry different moods and visual approaches in front of the camera.
Natalie does that very well. She can hold a direct, confident gaze in one frame, then shift into something softer, cooler, or more reflective in the next. That ability to change the feel of an image without making it look contrived is a real strength.
The Alternative Fashion Feel of the Shoot
The styling gave this session a very clear identity from the beginning. Black patent pieces, a striking red dress, studded details, strong eyeliner, facial piercings, and visible tattoos all helped shape the overall aesthetic. There is a definite punk and alternative fashion influence running through the set, but I did not want the images to feel costume-led. I wanted them to feel polished, contemporary, and visually intentional.
That is where the studio control really matters.
Glossy fabrics can be difficult if the lighting is not carefully managed, but when handled properly, they add shape, texture, and drama. In these images, the shine in the clothing helps define the form of the body and gives the portraits a clean, graphic quality. Combined with Natalie’s confidence and the simplicity of the backgrounds, it creates a look that feels edgy without becoming messy.
For me, this is one of the reasons studio portraiture works so well for alternative fashion photography. It allows the styling to speak, but it also gives the subject space to bring expression and personality into the frame without distractions.
Using Chiaroscuro and Gelled Lights in the Studio
A big part of the visual direction for this shoot came from the lighting. I wanted to combine gelled lights with a chiaroscuro approach so that the images had shape, atmosphere, and a slightly cinematic edge.
Chiaroscuro is a lighting approach based on the contrast between light and shadow. The word is often associated with painting, particularly classical and Renaissance work, but it translates beautifully into portrait photography. In practical terms, it means using light in a deliberate way to sculpt the face and body, letting some areas fall into shadow so the image has more depth, mood, and visual tension.
I often find that this kind of lighting works especially well when I want portraits to feel dramatic but still refined. It is not about making everything dark for the sake of it. It is about using shadow with purpose.
Alongside that, I used gelled accent lighting in red and blue in some of the setups. That gave parts of the shoot a moody, neo-noir feel that suited Natalie’s alternative styling extremely well. The coloured rim light helped separate her from the background and added another layer of atmosphere without overwhelming the portrait itself.
The cleaner, grey-background images have a more classic studio finish. They are crisp, simple, and direct. The darker frames with the red and blue accents feel more theatrical and editorial. Then the wet-look portraits shifted the tone again, introducing texture and intensity while still keeping everything controlled. That progression across the shoot gave us a lot of variety without losing the overall identity of the session.
Why I Always Value a Chaperone on Shoots
Natalie always comes to the studio with Conner as her chaperone, and it is always a pleasure to have him there. He is such a nice chap, easy to get on with, and very supportive. I genuinely think that having a chaperone present on shoots is important, and I have said that for a long time.
For me, it comes down to professionalism, comfort, and trust.
A chaperone helps create a better working environment. It gives the person being photographed an added sense of reassurance, especially on longer shoots or sessions involving multiple outfit changes. It also makes the whole experience feel more relaxed because there is a familiar face in the room. When someone feels comfortable, it nearly always shows in the photographs.
From my side, I see it as part of working properly and respectfully. I have absolutely no issue with another person being present during a shoot. In fact, I welcome it. A good chaperone can make the session smoother, calmer, and more enjoyable for everyone involved. It helps reinforce the fact that the shoot is collaborative, professional, and built on mutual respect.
I think the industry is better when this is normalised rather than treated as unusual.
Portraits With Strength, Personality, and Range
What gives this set its character is not just the styling or the lighting. It is the way Natalie carries the looks.
Some of the frames are strong and direct, almost confrontational in the best sense, with very deliberate body language and eye contact. Others are quieter and more reflective. That variation is what stops the shoot from feeling one-note. It brings personality into the work and gives the portfolio more depth.
I always want a portrait session to produce more than just a collection of technically good photographs. I want the images to say something about the person in front of the camera. In this case, the photographs show confidence, edge, femininity, control, and a real sense of self. That is what makes the set feel cohesive, even as the lighting and wardrobe shift from frame to frame.
There is a lot of strength in these portraits, but also elegance. That balance matters.
Why Repeat Collaborations Often Produce Stronger Work
One of the advantages of having photographed Natalie more than once is that we already have that foundation of trust. We know how each other work, and that makes it much easier to push ideas further, refine what worked well last time, and try something new without overthinking it.
I often find that repeat collaborations produce stronger work for exactly that reason. The first shoot is often about getting to know each other, understanding pace, communication, and visual direction. After that, there is far more room to build something with confidence.
That definitely applies here. This session felt focused from the start. We were not trying to figure everything out from scratch. We were building on previous shoots and using that familiarity to create a stronger, more refined set of images for Natalie’s portfolio.
Final Thoughts
This shoot had a dark, edgy, fashion-led feel, combining clean studio portraiture with bold styling, glossy textures, and confident expression to create a set of images that feel both alternative and polished.
It is always great working with Natalie, and this session was another reminder of how valuable it is when a model brings both a strong sense of personal style and the ability to adapt in front of the camera. We created headshots, portraits, and fashion-led portfolio images that feel cohesive, but still show real variety, which is exactly what I want from a studio session like this.
I am already looking forward to the next shoot. We are planning the next one now, and I think it is fair to say this has become a brilliant collaboration.
