As a commercial photographer based in Suffolk, I’m always looking for chances to grow. Recently I joined a group of photographers for an evening of light painting on Aldeburgh Beach. This personal project brought together technique, location and good company.
The Organiser
The evening was organised by Adrian, also known as nite.eyz, a photographer with a real feel for light painting. His guidance turned the night into a lesson for everyone there.
The Magic Hour
Autumn is creeping in and the days are shortening, which brings the magic hour, the short window after sunset, to a more convenient time. For those of us who like an early night, it is a good chance to work on personal projects without upsetting the daily routine.
The Scallop on Aldeburgh Beach
Our work was framed by the Scallop, the sculpture on the shingle at Aldeburgh Beach. Created by local-born artist Maggi Hambling, it is a tribute to composer Benjamin Britten, a former resident of Aldeburgh who used to walk this stretch of coast. That history added something to the evening.
The Gift of Mist
A mist rolled in across the beach and lifted the mood, adding depth to the photographs. It suited the light painting and made each shot more atmospheric.
Personal Projects
Projects like this let me push at boundaries and try new techniques. Light painting turns dark surroundings into a canvas, and it is a rich way to make images while working with the environment rather than against it.
Conclusion
The evening in Aldeburgh was a real pleasure. Good company, the Scallop as a backdrop and mist to lift the atmosphere made it a proper learning curve. Chances like these are an invitation to engage with your surroundings and grow as a photographer.
