As a photographer based in Suffolk, I work with a range of talented people. Roma is one of them, a 17-year-old singer-songwriter, and this session added to her growing model portfolio, shot at my studio.

A portfolio is a model’s visual CV. It shows their range, character and versatility, and without it agencies struggle to see what a model can do. A good set of images captures that range and the ability to take on different roles, which is exactly what Roma wanted.

Having photographed Roma several times, we already had a good rapport. When she arrived at my studio in Bentwaters, Suffolk, she was relaxed and ready to work. Her mother came as chaperone, which I insist on for under-18s and welcome for anyone.

A portfolio shoot is not one-size-fits-all. It is built around the model’s range. The shot list usually covers a headshot, a full-length photo and a portrait that shows character, but it is about more than ticking boxes. The aim is imagery that reflects who the model is.
