Blending Fashion, Culture, and Artistry
Photography is more than capturing an image, it is about telling a story. Elegant Exposures is a personal project that blends fashion styling with fine art studio photography, focusing on culture, expression, and theatrical storytelling. Collaborating with stylist Sue Hardy, we created a studio shoot that brought two visually striking themes to life.
The Creative Team Behind the Shoot
Sue Hardy – Fashion Stylist
Sue Hardy’s career is a tapestry of artistic endeavours, ranging from luxury hairdressing in London to creative millinery and theatrical performances. Her experience in styling extends beyond contemporary fashion, encompassing historical influences, upcycling vintage pieces, and working in performance art. Sue’s ability to blend traditional and modern aesthetics makes her a valuable creative partner in photography projects.
Bob Foyers – Fashion Photographer
My role in this project was to capture the intricate details of styling, pose, and mood. I focus on creating cinematic portrait photography that enhances the depth and narrative of each image. By combining dramatic lighting, textured backdrops, and fine details, I aim to produce editorial portraits that feel immersive and timeless.
The Models
Three models, Morrigan, Crystal, and Adam, took part in this session, embodying the essence of our two distinct styles.
Morrigan: Featured in both looks, bringing elegance and grace to each theme.
Crystal: Captured the essence of regal poise in both the South Asian and Baroque-inspired sets.
Adam: Brought theatricality and presence to the session, embracing bold styling and expressive posing.
The Two Distinct Looks
Look 1: “Spices of India” – South Asian-Inspired Elegance
This set was designed to highlight the richness of South Asian fashion, combining luxurious textures, intricate embellishments, and poised expressions. The styling was deeply influenced by traditional South Asian clothing, offering a fusion of heritage and contemporary aesthetics.
Key Elements:
- Traditional attire with embroidery, beadwork, and intricate detailing.
- Rich and vibrant colours, including gold, purple, blue, green, orange, and black.
- Regal postures that enhanced the cultural theme.
- A warm, neutral-toned backdrop complements the richness of the garments.
Outfits and Styling:
- Adam was dressed in a black silk tunic and trousers, paired with a black and red waistcoat. Accessories included black and red flip-flops and a striking red and blue jewelled earring.
- Morrigan wore a stunning Indian dress in gold, purple, blue, and orange, adorned with jewelled stones. She was draped in a gold shawl and accessorised with silver sandals, gold bangles, and an exquisite Indian gold necklace with matching earrings.
- Crystal was styled in a vibrant purple and green Indian dress with gold and silver jewelled embellishments. She wore a green and gold-edged shawl, brown sandals, a purple bracelet, and multicoloured drop earrings.
Look 2: “Louis XIV with a Twist!” – Baroque/18th-Century Opulence
This set was inspired by the grandeur of 18th-century European fashion, reimagined with a playful modern twist. The styling fused period aesthetics with a bold contemporary edge.
Key Elements:
- Historical-inspired outfits with intricate fabrics, ruffles, and dramatic silhouettes.
- Soft, directional lighting enhanced the rich textures of the garments.
- Vintage-style backdrops featuring deep reds, golds, and Baroque-style drapery.
Outfits and Styling:
- Adam embraced a gender-fluid take on Baroque fashion, wearing a lilac ruffled blouse, pale blue satin trousers, red winkle pickers, and a black bowler hat, accessorised with pearl necklaces and a drop pearl earring, 2025 meets Louis XIV.
- Morrigan was styled in a red and black Louis XIV-inspired dress with layers of net petticoats, bright orange stockings, and blue and white Irregular shoes. She accessorised with gold jewellery, a red fan, and a voluminous white wig adorned with jewellery and flowers.
- Crystal wore a dramatic purple and black Louis XIV-style dress with net petticoats, bright yellow stockings, and purple and white Irregular shoes. She completed the look with a yellow fan, a delicate purple and silver necklace, matching drop earrings, and a striking red wig embellished with flowers and diamanté pins.
Lighting and Composition
Dramatic lighting played a key role in bringing out the details of both looks. Soft yet directional lighting helped sculpt the outfits and highlight the textures of the fabrics. A mixture of:
- Softbox and reflector setups for even illumination.
- Spotlighting techniques to enhance depth and dimension.
- Textured backdrops that provided visual contrast to the subjects.
The Importance of Styling in Narrative Photography
Styling is fundamental in storytelling. Sue’s attention to detail, from selecting accessories to ensuring the right balance of colour and texture, played a pivotal role in shaping the shoot’s visual impact. This level of precision makes a difference in editorial and fine art studio photography, where every detail contributes to the final image.
The Vision of Elegant Exposures
Elegant Exposures aims to bridge fashion and fine art photography, moving beyond traditional portraits to create images that tell a deeper story. Each photograph is a fusion of styling, lighting, and emotion, crafting visuals that resonate beyond the moment they were captured.
Conclusion
This studio shoot was a dynamic exploration of cultural and historical influences, brought to life through thoughtful styling and creative execution. The combination of South Asian-inspired fashion and Baroque grandeur allowed us to push creative boundaries and refine our approach to editorial portrait photography.
