Recently, Anja returned to my studio to update her professional headshots. It had been over 18 months since our last session, so it was the right time to refresh her portfolio with a new set of images. Actor headshots are vital tools in the industry, and keeping them current is one of the best ways for performers to stand out.
Why Actors Need Professional Headshots
For actors, headshots are the first impression. Casting directors, agents, and producers rely on them when shortlisting for roles. A strong headshot communicates not only appearance but also personality, versatility, and confidence. Without one that feels authentic, an actor risks being overlooked before they’ve even had a chance to audition.
Why Variety Matters in Actor Headshots
An actor’s portfolio should include a range of looks. Casting calls can vary greatly, from period dramas to contemporary films or commercials. A single style of headshot won’t always show the full scope of what an actor can bring to a role. For this reason, I always encourage different outfits, backgrounds, and expressions during a session. With Anja, we worked through several changes, each one offering something distinct for her acting portfolio.
- Neutral and approachable – simple studio shots in classic black clothing, ideal for Spotlight profiles.
- Dramatic and expressive – stronger, moodier images that highlight intensity and presence.
- Stylised and characterful – outfits with more texture and colour to suggest different casting types.
This variety gives her the flexibility to choose images that suit different submissions, whether for theatre, film, or commercial work.
Studio vs Outdoor Headshots
Outdoor locations can add texture and atmosphere, but studio headshots offer complete control over lighting and tone. My Suffolk studio at Bentwaters allows me to fine-tune light, background, and expression so that each image feels polished yet natural. For Anja’s session, we used clean, simple backgrounds in different shades to give each look a professional finish.
What Casting Directors Look For
Casting professionals often emphasise three things when reviewing headshots: clarity, truth, and range. They want to see a face clearly, without heavy retouching or distractions. They want honesty, not glamourised portraits. And they want options, headshots that show how an actor might fit into multiple roles. Keeping this in mind, I always aim for images that feel genuine, straightforward, and versatile.
Preparing for a Studio Headshot Session
Actors often ask what they should bring or wear. My advice is always the same:
- Keep clothing simple and free from bold patterns (unless you want a specific stylised option).
- Bring a few changes, such as plain tops, smart shirts, or textured fabrics.
- Think about hair, keep it natural, but be ready to adjust between shots.
- Rest, hydrate, and come ready to relax in front of the camera.
Confidence and comfort are just as important as lighting and composition. My role is to create an atmosphere where that can come through naturally.
