Product photography can be tricky, especially with specialised components that need real care. That’s the part I enjoy, every job brings a different problem to solve.
When CMG Technologies Ltd asked me to photograph three of their 3D-printed stainless steel products, I was glad to take it on. With over 25 years supplying injection-moulded components to demanding industries, medical, aerospace, automotive and industrial, CMG is an internationally known specialist in Metal Injection Moulding (MIM), and they are ISO 9001 accredited.
Photo stacking
To capture the fine detail on these parts I used photo stacking. It means taking a series of shots of the same subject, each focused at a slightly different point, then combining them in software into one image with far greater depth of field. The whole product ends up sharp, front to back.
It’s especially useful with intricate components, where you would otherwise have to trade detail against depth of field. With stacking you keep both.
The result
The finished set is a group of clean, high-quality images that show the products at their best, which is what CMG wanted to help their clients picture the parts.
