There are few things in life as joyful as a room full of miniature dachshund puppies. When Beth from Marthers Miniature Dachshunds asked me to photograph her newest litter, I knew this would be a session full of character, movement, and a whole lot of cuteness.

Behind the Scenes at Marthers
Beth runs Marthers Miniature Dachshunds with care and ethics at the core of everything she does. Her home isn’t just where the dogs live, it’s their world. Her six resident dachshunds are family members, not kennel dogs. They sleep on the sofas, romp through open countryside, and lounge in beds like royalty. It’s this environment of love and freedom that shapes each puppy’s personality.
The attention to detail is astonishing. From daily walks on four acres of private countryside to home-reared litters with 24/7 care, every choice Beth makes is about the health and happiness of her dogs. They are treated like cherished family members, and it shows in the puppies they raise.
These seven puppies were no exception. Born into a home filled with attention and affection, they were lively, curious, and already full of charm. From the get-go, it was clear they had inherited both beautiful coats and confident characters. It’s no surprise that their litters are usually reserved before they’re even born.

A Litter to Remember
This litter is the final one for 2025, all homed before they were even born, a testament to the reputation Beth has built over time. These puppies are KC Registered, with champion bloodlines, and have had their genetic health carefully protected through DNA-matched pairings.
Their coats were a perfect mix of classic and dappled:
- CHOCOLATE & TAN DAPPLE
- BLACK & TAN SILVER DAPPLE
Each pup had their own look, but what stood out more was their presence in front of the camera. Some were bolder, nose right up to the lens. Others took their time, eyeing me with suspicion before creeping forward on little paws. A few struck poses naturally, while others gave me a delightful challenge by bouncing out of the frame every few seconds.
What made it more heartwarming was knowing that these pups aren’t just bred for beauty, they’re bred for life. Beth carefully chooses pairings based on genetic compatibility to keep the Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) well below average. It’s a scientifically sound and compassionate approach.

Photographing Puppies: Patience, Timing, and Floor Space
Photographing young dogs isn’t about posing. It’s about patience. You need to get down on their level, watch how they move, and stay ready to capture that moment, the slight tilt of the head, the stretch of the paws, the instant where they look straight at you with those soulful eyes.
We used a clean white background to highlight their features and let their personalities shine. Natural light was balanced with gentle studio lighting to keep the pups comfortable, never startled. No flashes, no loud distractions, just quiet observation and an open floor.
Despite their energy (and occasional need for a toilet break mid-shot), they were remarkably responsive. I kept the shoot short and relaxed, letting them explore, sniff, play, and pause. That’s when the real magic happens.
Some puppies responded to the squeak of a toy. Others were more motivated by treats. A few simply wanted to be held. It’s all about reading the moment and being ready to shoot when they settle into that perfect, fleeting expression.

Why This Shoot Mattered
This wasn’t just about creating cute photos. Beth understands the importance of presentation. These portraits help future owners see the essence of each puppy. They show more than markings, they show character.
Beth’s commitment to lifelong support, low inbreeding coefficients, and the happiness of each puppy shines through. Her clients range from loving families to dog trainers and even veterinary professionals. Some pups have become Instagram-famous. These portraits support that journey.
Professional photography also adds an extra layer of trust. It shows that a breeder values transparency and quality. It gives prospective owners a better feel for who these puppies are, even before they meet them in person.

A Few Faces From the Litter
Below are just a few of the final portraits from the shoot:
Each one tells its own story, and I was lucky to be part of documenting the start of their next chapter. Their unique looks will change as they grow, but these portraits capture the very beginning, the innocence, the promise, the first expressions of who they are becoming.
