It is always a pleasure to watch an artist at work, and Laurence Edwards is no exception. I was lucky enough to visit him at his studio in Saxmundham, a stark contrast to the foundry in Butley where I had photographed him before. Where the foundry was busy and industrial, the studio was calm and reflective.
The studio was flooded with natural light, and a wall of mirrors only added to the sense of space. Laurence clearly thrives in that quiet atmosphere, and it was the right setting for him to work his ideas out. Wax sculptures filled the room, some in progress, others seemingly set aside. Whatever their state, they were all striking.
As I settled in to photograph him at work, I was struck by the skill and dedication he brings to his craft. I was grateful to catch the moment. The title, “double take”, refers both to this being my second time photographing Laurence and to the mirror image in the shot.
I am looking forward to catching up with him again soon at his new foundry in Halesworth. It will be interesting to see how that space compares with the others, and I am keen to see what he makes next.
