As a seasoned photographer, I continually seek new horizons in the diverse world of fashion photography. My latest venture, based in the charming locales of Halesworth, Suffolk, was a remarkable journey into a realm where vintage meets modern. Collaborating with the talented stylist, Sue Hardy, our mission was to fuse bygone-era elegance with today’s casual wear, thus appealing to a broad spectrum of style enthusiasts.
Crafting Timeless Elegance
On the 4th of March 2024, we embarked on a project that epitomised the convergence of different fashion epochs. Our goal was to illustrate the fluidity and adaptability of vintage couture when combined with contemporary apparel. The result was a striking assemblage of attire, ranging from the epitome of elegance to audacious and playful ensembles.
Inspired by the vast chronicles of fashion, we aimed to demonstrate how an eclectic combination can cultivate a vibrant yet affordable wardrobe. The creative synergy was evident in our pairings, like a Victorian-style cane with modern elements like a blazer, jeans, and DMs, offset by vintage gloves and pearls, creating a distinctive, eye-catching look. This photoshoot was more than a mere capture of images; it was an exploration into the future of content creation, location selection, and styling innovations.
Choosing the Perfect Backdrop: Halesworth, Suffolk
For this particular photoshoot, we chose Halesworth for its intrinsic allure and its impressive array of vintage clothing offerings. Valiers, a veritable treasure trove of vintage charm, and Portobello East Coast, with its extensive collection of vintage finds, provided the authentic atmosphere that greatly enhanced our photography.
Theme: A Dialogue of Eras
The central theme was carefully selected to represent the interplay between vintage sophistication and modern functionality. Our colour palette and styling elements were as vibrant and diverse as fashion itself, encapsulating its multifaceted essence.
The Ensemble Narratives: Outfits and Styling
Each outfit, meticulously curated by Sue, narrated its unique tale. The poised elegance of the bird-print dress paired with combat boots, the seamless grace of the embroidered black dress, and the vibrant red Cheongsam against a vintage backdrop exemplified a harmonious fusion of periods. An exploration of fashion was epitomised in the image of a woman traversing a vintage store in a pinstripe blazer, accented with pearls and red gloves. In one striking scene, amidst static mannequins, a live model in a flapper-style dress brought an aura of animation, while a theatrical outfit with a hot pink hat and tulle skirt echoed the playful spirit of our theme.
Photography: Capturing the Essence
My approach to capturing these moments is influenced by the legendary Norman Parkinson. Using a Canon 5ds with a 24-70mm lens and a Godox AD 200 with a 90cm rice bowl softbox, I aimed to isolate our subjects, usually shooting around f2.8. In post-processing, handled predominantly in Lightroom, I employed a custom preset to cool the backgrounds and warm the skin tones, thus enhancing the vibrancy and making the clothing stand out.
Collaborations and Acknowledgements
This creative endeavour was brought to life by our model, Sophia, who exemplified each style with grace and adaptability. Special thanks go to Catherine and the proprietors of the Halesworth shops, who graciously allowed us to transform their spaces into canvases for our fashion stories.
In conclusion, this project not only showcased an exquisite blend of fashion eras but also highlighted the transformative power of photography in telling compelling style narratives. As a photographer in Suffolk, specialising in fashion and commercial photography, I remain committed to pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, continually exploring new and innovative ways to capture and present the world of fashion.
