Lauren Jennifar

Lauren Jennifar is an Americana singer-songwriter who performs as The Goth Cowgirl. She blends country, rock and blues, and her visual identity follows the same logic as her music: Western in structure, Gothic in mood. When she got in touch about a studio session, the brief was straightforward. She needed cover art for her EP and a set of promo images, and she came with a clear visual direction already formed.

Planning the Shoot

Lauren had put together a Pinterest board before we spoke, which made the planning conversation easy. The direction was dark and deliberate: moody backgrounds, layered textures, directional light. Her wardrobe included black lace, leather, a wide-brimmed cowboy hat sourced from Vera Black and jewellery from Love Rokz. She had thought carefully about how each piece worked together, and that preparation made a real difference. We were not figuring things out on the day; we were building on a plan she had already shaped.

I photograph musicians

Lauren Jennifer is a singer and songwriter. This shoot was built for her music, not for a mood board, and it is worth saying plainly, because most people who find these images arrive through the aesthetic and never realise there is a working musician behind them.

Promo photography for musicians and bands is a regular part of what I do at my studio at Bentwaters, near Woodbridge. Press shots, artist portraits, band images, cover artwork, and pictures that have to work on Spotify, on socials and on a gig listing.

A press shot has a job to do. It has to survive being cropped to a small circle on a streaming profile and still work as a full-width banner across a venue’s website. Those are not the same photograph, and if nobody thinks about it before the shutter goes, you end up with an image that only works in one place.

The Studio Session

I photographed Lauren at my studio at Bentwaters, using dark warm-toned backdrops to complement the styling. The combination of industrial space, lace and leather worked without needing anything added.

For lighting, I used directional Rembrandt-style positioning to create depth and shadow, with a soft fill to retain detail in the darker areas without flattening the image. All-black clothing against a dark background creates a separation problem, and I adjusted the light intensity and position to keep the images readable while keeping the mood intact.

I mixed tight portrait crops with wider full-length frames throughout. The close-ups work well for social media and streaming profiles; the wider shots give more flexibility for press, posters and release graphics.
