Working with The Dolly Mixtures of Norwich was one of the most enjoyable studio sessions I have had in a long time. The group is made up of five strong and expressive performers: Madam Marie, Miss Tigris, Miss Valen Sparkle, Mina Pearl and Trixy Tiger. They are part of Snapdragon Cabaret and have built a reputation for being vibrant, fearless and very funny. Their energy filled the studio from the moment they walked in, and it never dipped throughout the entire session.
A Studio Shoot with Two Purposes
The group needed a mix of portrait images for general promotion and a second set of themed images for their Christmas shows. We planned both sets carefully so each member had time to explore different looks without feeling rushed. The Dolly Mixtures are great fun to photograph because they know how to play to the camera, but they also bring real emotion, which gives the images depth.
Each performer presented two contrasting outfits. The first set reflected their classic burlesque style, with corsets, lace, feathers, gloves and a touch of theatrical attitude. The second set embraced bold Christmas styling, complete with hats, tinsel, themed dresses and props. This helped us build a varied set of images that the group can use across social media, posters, promotional material and future cabaret announcements.
A Group with a Clear and Powerful Ethos
One of the most important elements of this shoot was the group’s shared ethos. Four of the five performers are in their fifties, and this is not a detail to gloss over. It is central to who they are and why they work so well together. They are proud to be older women who continue to perform, entertain and take up space with confidence.
Women of this age group often describe feeling unseen or overlooked. The Dolly Mixtures have taken the opposite path. They have stepped forward, not back. Burlesque has given them a platform to express themselves and find community. Their work challenges the idea that performance, glamour and sensuality belong only to younger people. Instead, they show that confidence grows with age, and experience brings a richer sense of presence.
Their attitude towards body positivity is refreshing. Nothing about it feels forced. There is no pressure to present a perfect image or to hide what makes them unique. They enjoy who they are, and that joy translates directly into the photographs. It was clear during the shoot that they are proud of themselves and proud of one another. Their support for each other is genuine. When one person stepped in front of the camera, the others encouraged her, adjusted details, fixed hair, or gave suggestions. It was a warm and lively environment that never felt competitive.
Miss Tigris made a strong point when we discussed the blog post. She wanted the group’s message to be clear. They promote self empowerment for women of all shapes, sizes and ages. For her, that message matters as much as the performance itself. Mina Pearl echoed this sentiment, saying that older women can feel invisible and that the group helps change that through performance and friendship. Both comments highlight the heart of The Dolly Mixtures. They are entertainers, but they are also advocates for joyful self expression.
A Wonderful Group Dynamic
The Dolly Mixtures work as a team. They have a natural rhythm when they are together. Some groups need a little time to warm up in the studio, but these five settled straight in. Their humour and confidence helped the whole session flow with ease. When a performer can laugh freely and feel supported, the camera sees that freedom. The shoot was filled with expressive poses, playful ideas and moments of genuine emotion.
I often say that photographing people is easier when they trust you. Trust creates better portraits. This group was open and warm from the start, which meant we could experiment with poses and ideas without hesitation. They were happy to try new things, shift direction, and refine details until each shot felt right.
Their Christmas outfits added an extra layer of fun. The mixture of red, white, glitter and festive props gave the session a lively feel. Candy canes, red velvet capes and small hats were passed around and used with enthusiasm. The contrast between the classic burlesque styling and the Christmas sets made the overall gallery visually diverse, which will give the group plenty of options for future posts and promotional use.
Why I Use a Grey Background for Sessions Like This
I often choose a neutral grey background for shoots of this nature because it is practical, flexible and reliable. Grey avoids the issues that come with strong coloured backdrops. Some coloured papers create unwanted colour casts that affect skin tones, clothing colours and makeup. Grey keeps everything clean and accurate, which helps maintain consistency across a session. When working with performers who wear bold and varied costumes, this accuracy is vital.
Lighting interacts with grey in a very predictable way. By adjusting the balance and position of the lights, I can make the background shift from a light misty tone to a deeper charcoal without changing the backdrop itself. This makes the workflow efficient and allows the focus to stay on the performers rather than the technical setup. Grey also handles shadows well, which is useful when shooting lace, feathers, sequins and detailed accessories, all of which appear frequently in burlesque styling.
From an editing point of view, grey is simple to work with. It can be extended, softened or replaced with ease if a designer later needs more space for text or layout adjustments. Promo images are often used in posters, banners, websites and social media templates, and grey supports these uses without clashing with brand colours.
Grey backgrounds also age well. Strong colours can feel tied to a particular trend or period. Grey stays timeless. This is important for performers who will reuse their images for future shows, not just a single season.
The Experience of Photographing the Group
The length of the session allowed each performer to explore different poses and expressions. Some took a classic burlesque approach with strong eye contact and bold lines. Others leaned into character work with humour and theatrical presence. The range of personalities provided a good mix of styles. Madam Marie brought elegance. Miss Tigris brought sharp energy. Miss Valen Sparkle brought warmth and a striking sense of character. Mina Pearl added expressive poise. Trixy Tiger brought bold confidence and a strong visual identity that carries well through the camera.
Their friendship was evident throughout. When someone stepped behind the lights, the others watched with interest and support. They offered advice, shared jokes and created an environment that felt safe and uplifting. This type of atmosphere is exactly what encourages natural expression in portraits.
Testimonials from the Performers
I asked several of the group members if there was anything they would like included in the blog post. Their comments offer insight into who they are and why they perform.
Miss Tigris:
Promoting self empowerment for all women no matter what shape, size or age.
Testimonial from Miss Tigris:
Bob is a very professional yet down to earth photographer. You are made to feel at ease from the moment you walk in the room. I would happily recommend Foyers Photography to anyone.
Mina Pearl:
We are a group of older women who have bonded after discovering burlesque and perform together. Often women of our age group can feel invisible, so we are promoting the fact that we can still get out there and entertain.
Testimonial from Mina Pearl:
Bob is a fantastic photographer who puts you at ease and gives guidance if like me you feel a bit at a loss what to do sometimes. I felt more confident by the end of the shoot and look forward to doing another. The final photos were fabulous. Thoroughly recommend, thanks Bob.
Testimonial from Trixy Tiger:
From the moment I arrived, Bob created an atmosphere that was calm, reassuring and highly professional. The standard of the work is exceptional. The images were not only technically outstanding but also captured me at my best. Bob’s attention to detail, clear direction and creative eye set him apart. I would have no hesitation in recommending Foyers Photography.
Testimonial from Madam Marie:
I recently had the pleasure of working with Bob Foyers for a photoshoot, and I would like to provide a testimonial reflecting my experience.
From the moment I arrived, Bob created an atmosphere that was calm, reassuring, and highly professional. He had a natural ability to put me at ease, which made the entire shoot feel more relaxed and enjoyable. The studio itself was well-equipped, spacious, and thoughtfully laid out, including a dressing room that allowed for comfortable and private preparation between shoots.
The standard of Bob’s work is exceptional. The images produced were in abundance and not only technically outstanding but also captured me at my absolute best. As a part-time mature model with experience across a range of photographers, I can say with complete honesty that these photographs rank among the best I have ever received.
Bob’s attention to detail, clear direction, and creative eye set him apart. I would have no hesitation in recommending Bob Foyers Photography to anyone seeking high-quality images and a thoroughly professional experience from start to finish.
Looking Ahead
I am looking forward to seeing how The Dolly Mixtures use these images in their upcoming shows and promotional material. They have a strong identity and a sense of purpose that comes through clearly in every photograph. Working with a group who value confidence, friendship and self expression always makes a session memorable.
These images represent more than a photoshoot. They represent the joy of performing, the power of community and the message that creativity is not limited by age. The Dolly Mixtures are living proof of that.
If any of the performers need further editing, layout variations or specific crops for posters or social posts, I am always happy to help. I look forward to the next time our paths cross.
