Every model portfolio shoot brings something new to the table. This recent session with Margita was about versatility, elegance and character. She may be new to modelling, but her professionalism and preparation made the day flow with confidence. From the start, I could see how much thought she put into each look, from clothing and accessories to makeup and expression. The shoot took place at my studio near Woodbridge in Suffolk, where controlled lighting allows me to create a clean, consistent environment for model portfolio sessions. For Margita, I wanted to build a sequence of looks that showed her range, from refined glamour to timeless fashion. Across six outfits, we explored colour, texture and mood, ensuring she left with a collection that would strengthen her professional portfolio and social media presence. A lot of the styling for this session was done by Sue, who I often collaborate with on my personal project Elegant Exposures. Sue has a great eye for detail and always brings creative flair to each concept, helping refine every look to match the lighting, mood and story we want to convey. A model portfolio session like this isn’t just about creating beautiful images; it’s about building a foundation of trust and understanding between photographer and model. That connection translates directly into authentic expressions and body language, which is vital when a model is building a career.
Look 1 – Emerald and Sapphire Contrast
Margita started the day with bold confidence in an outfit that immediately caught the light. A structured emerald green satin blouse paired with a ruched royal blue skirt created a stunning combination of jewel tones. The material reflected the soft studio lighting beautifully, revealing every fold and shimmer. Her pose, one hand resting lightly on her waist, conveyed self-assurance and calm strength. We kept the background neutral so that the focus remained on her styling and natural expression. The lighting was soft but directional, sculpting her face and accentuating the sheen of the fabrics. To complete the look, Margita wore gold geometric earrings and a strong red lip. Together they gave the image a modern, editorial edge that was striking, elegant and instantly memorable. It was the perfect way to start a session that promised variety and sophistication.

Look 2 – Turquoise Elegance
The second look shifted tone completely. Here, Margita wore a delicately embroidered turquoise outfit that blended beadwork and sheer layers. The translucent fabric caught the light with a gentle sparkle, creating an ethereal, almost dreamlike quality. We softened the lighting to create a subtle gradient, allowing highlights to fall across her shoulders and the fine embroidery to glow softly. Margita’s calm pose and steady gaze added a sense of stillness that reminded me of classical portrait painting. She chose ornate purple and gold earrings to accentuate the rich jewel tones of the ensemble, adding another layer of colour harmony. The combination of light, texture and expression produced images that felt both modern and timeless. It’s a look that would sit beautifully in a fashion portfolio or even a magazine editorial spread.

Look 3 – Monochrome Power Suit
After the delicate textures of the previous look, we moved into a sharper, more structured aesthetic. Margita changed into a tailored black tuxedo jacket and crisp white shirt, finished with layered pearls, a top hat and a cane. This was pure confidence, cinematic, theatrical and unapologetically bold. I adjusted the lighting to create a dramatic fall-off, adding depth and contrast reminiscent of black-and-white film photography. Her sideways glance into the light gave the image a sense of narrative, as if caught mid-scene in a classic film. With minimal colour and strong composition, the result balanced sophistication with a hint of rebellion. This is one of those looks that truly defines model portfolio photography Suffolk at its best, refined artistry with a sense of story.

Look 4 – Vintage Polka-Dot Glamour
Look four was all about nostalgia. Margita stepped into a fitted polka-dot dress with a black fur stole, long white gloves and a pillbox hat complete with a netted veil. Every detail, from the accessories to the posture, captured the timeless allure of 1940s and 1950s portraiture. The lighting here was classic Rembrandt-style, with a subtle triangle of light beneath one eye. It highlighted her red lipstick and pearl earrings perfectly, enhancing the sense of period authenticity. We worked through a sequence of gentle turns and side profiles to create a variety of compositions that echoed the elegance of mid-century photography. Each frame felt cinematic, carrying the poise and discipline that define vintage-inspired fashion shoots.

Look 5 – Scarlet Satin Statement
For the fifth look, Margita wore a rich scarlet satin gown with a deep neckline and open back. The simplicity of the design allowed the focus to rest entirely on her posture and expression. Satin can be tricky to light well, but with careful positioning and soft key lighting, the fabric came alive, shimmering without losing detail. The combination of light and shadow emphasised the gown’s fluid movement and Margita’s natural poise. Her expression was calm yet commanding, and this sequence of images became some of my personal favourites from the session. They carried a cinematic intensity that worked beautifully both in colour and in monochrome. This look also demonstrates how minimal styling can still make a powerful statement. It’s an important reminder for anyone building a modelling portfolio that simplicity, when done well, allows your confidence and presence to shine through.

Look 6 – Red Sequinned Elegance
The session concluded with a look that shimmered with energy. Margita wore a deep red sequinned gown, the kind of outfit that comes alive under studio lighting. Every movement caught the light differently, producing a dynamic sparkle without being overpowering. She paired the gown with vintage-style jewellery, statement rings and earrings that tied the ensemble together. The pose we chose was elegant yet grounded, one hand lightly resting on her cheek, the other tracing her collarbone. The lighting setup for this final look was warmer and more directional, enhancing both her skin tone and the glow of the sequins. It brought the session to a close with a touch of cinematic glamour, a perfect final chapter in a series that celebrated style, individuality and professionalism.

Reflecting on the Session
Working with Margita was an absolute pleasure. She approached every look with enthusiasm and attention to detail. Her ability to adapt quickly between styles made the session feel seamless, and the variety we achieved in one day was remarkable. Sue’s input throughout was invaluable, ensuring that each look felt complete and cohesive. This shoot also reinforces something I always remind new models: confidence grows with experience. Each session helps you understand light, angles and how to bring emotion into a frame. Photography is a collaboration, and when that connection works, as it did here, the results speak for themselves.
