For those of you who have been following my blog, you will be aware that I am completing the Dogwood52 photography challenge, in which I take a photo every week based on a set theme. Last week’s theme was ‘landscape: get high’. For some time now I have wanted to take an aerial photo over my ever growing home town, Saxmundham, and decided this week would coincide perfectly. I made arrangements with St John’s church to climb to the top (luckily I’m not scared of heights!!) and capture the sun setting.
Being given a guided tour to the top of the church was in itself a privileged opportunity, and my thanks go to Robin for taking time out of his day and allowing me to do this. The climb itself is certainly not for the faint hearted and for those that are a little claustrophobic I would recommend saying a little prayer before making your way up! I have to say some of the hatches were rather a squeeze!! Being 6’4″ also didn’t go in my favour, the tower was obviously designed for a generation that was a lot smaller and slimmer than myself! If you would like to see my ascent to the top click here.
The effort to get to the top, however, was well worth it, the view over Saxmundham was magnificent and I was very lucky to take a few moments to enjoy the view and the sunset before getting this shot. I would love to come back one day to document the changes to our town, and enjoy the wonderful views.
