I am always looking to create images that hold a viewer’s attention. Recently I worked with the sculptor and painter Kristina Tonev (@kristina.tonev) on a studio shoot inspired by classic fine art statues. Here is the thinking behind it and how we made it work.
Inspiration: Michelangelo’s David and Renaissance Masterpieces
Our starting point was Michelangelo’s David, along with other Renaissance works that have lasted. The Renaissance celebrated the human form in detailed, realistic ways, and we wanted to carry that spirit into the studio by honouring the beauty of the female form as those artists once did.
Working with Kristina Tonev: A Pleasure and a Privilege
Working with Kristina Tonev was a joy. As a sculptor and painter she has a deep understanding of the human form, which made her an ideal model. Her professionalism and artistic eye shaped the session, and it is always a privilege to work with someone who shares an appreciation for the craft.
The Photoshoot: Creating a Living Statue
To create the sense of a living statue we shot at Foyers Photography in Bentwaters, Woodbridge, Suffolk. The studio let us control the lighting and setup precisely, so we could match the mood of the statues that inspired us. We chose the wardrobe, make-up and poses to echo the grace of Renaissance work, drawing on the natural lines and contours of the body to give the images a timeless, classical feel.
The Boudoir Side of My Business: Suffolk Boudoir
This shoot was part of the boudoir side of my business, Suffolk Boudoir (https://suffolkboudoir.co.uk/). Boudoir photography focuses on intimate, elegant images, and a Renaissance-inspired study of the female form sits naturally within it. At Suffolk Boudoir the aim is a comfortable, empowering session that lets each person feel confident and celebrates their individuality.

The Power of Timeless Artistry
This shoot with Kristina Tonev was a memorable one, and I feel honoured to have made images that nod to the artistry of the Renaissance. Drawing on the past is a good way to create work that lasts. You can see more of my portrait work in the portraits portfolio.
If you would like to explore boudoir photography or a creative project of your own, get in touch and we can create something that celebrates the human form.
