As I stepped out of my front door on that bright, clear morning of the Norwich Pride 2023, I felt a wave of excitement wash over me. A year had passed since my previous experience at Pride, and I was eager to make the most out of this one. You see, my endeavour for this year was different, more focused and intensely personal.
As a photographer, I’ve often found myself gravitating towards street photography, capturing fleeting moments and subtle nuances. Last year, during the Norwich Pride, I found joy in snapping quick pictures of vibrant moments. But this year, I wanted more. This time, I wanted to capture the essence of the people who make Pride what it is.
Now, for those of you who don’t know me, I must confess that I lean towards the introverted side of life. I’m rather a shy individual, and the thought of walking up to a complete stranger and asking for their portrait does cause my heart to beat a bit faster. But there’s something about a Pride rally that makes the impossible seem possible.
My journey started at The Forum, Norwich’s bustling community hub. However, it was the humble setting of Harris & James that truly marked the beginning of my Pride 2023 adventure. There, a lovely young lady working behind the counter agreed to let me take her portrait, giving my day a fantastic kick-start. I still fondly remember the click of my camera as I captured the first portrait of many that day.
As I navigated through the colourful crowds, I couldn’t help but admire the diversity around me. Pride has a unique way of bringing people together, people of different shapes, sizes, and backgrounds, all united by one simple belief: Love is love.
A memory that particularly stands out from that day involves two individuals I saw draped in trans flags. The flags, symbols of transgender pride and support, made a stunning backdrop as I observed them sharing a tender kiss. Not wanting to lose this beautiful moment, I asked if they wouldn’t mind repeating the kiss for the camera. To my surprise and delight, they happily obliged. They later told me that what I had initially witnessed was their first kiss, and knowing that I captured their second kiss felt incredibly special.
By the end of the day, I had accomplished what I set out to do. I had gone beyond street photography, capturing not just faces but stories, expressions, and emotions, essentially the very spirit of Norwich Pride 2023.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to every individual who allowed me to take their portrait that day. Each of you contributed to making my Pride 2023 a truly memorable experience. For those who had their portraits taken and would like a keepsake of that day, copies of the photos are available from my online gallery at Foyers Photography.
Pride in Norwich, Norfolk, is more than just a day of celebration. It’s a bold statement of love, acceptance, and unity. From my experience, I can confidently say that Pride 2023 reflected all these values and more. As a photographer, I’m privileged to have been a part of this glorious event, and I eagerly anticipate what Norwich Pride 2024 has in store.
Until then, keep spreading the love, because love, in all its forms, is indeed love.
