I recently had the chance to work on a portrait session with Sophia at a local farm near Halesworth. The shoot came together thanks to Shannon, who kindly let us use her property as the location. The countryside setting, complete with open fields, shady woodland paths, and rustic farm backdrops, gave us plenty of scope for creative photographs. Sophia has a natural love for horses, so it was no surprise she wanted her portraits taken with Trevor. Bringing animals into portrait photography always adds another layer of character. A horse like Trevor isn’t just a background element, he becomes part of the story.
The Session
This was one of those shoots that felt effortless from start to finish. Sophia arrived with a real sense of excitement, and that energy carried through the entire session. She had planned several outfits, from denim and boots to light summer dresses, each one adding variety and a different feel to the photographs. Trevor, calm and steady throughout, gave the session its grounding. Horses can sometimes be unpredictable in front of a camera, but he seemed completely comfortable, especially with Sophia by his side. That trust allowed us to capture moments that felt both natural and timeless. We began near the farmyard, where the rustic backdrop added texture and contrast. From there, we moved into the fields and along tree-lined paths where the light filtered through the leaves, creating soft, natural tones. One of the highlights came later in the day when Sophia rode Trevor through a wooded track as the evening sun broke through the branches. The atmosphere was cinematic, filled with golden light, and it translated beautifully in the photographs. What made the session so memorable was the combination of energy and ease. There was plenty of laughter, moments of quiet connection between Sophia and Trevor, and a rhythm that made the time pass quickly. Sessions like this are about more than producing images, they create memories too. Looking back through the gallery, each frame reflects not just Sophia’s personality but the spirit of the day itself.
Why Portraits with Horses Work So Well
Equine portraits are about more than capturing an image. They show connection and trust. When someone like Sophia, who feels at home with horses, steps into the frame, the results feel authentic and full of personality. These sessions also highlight the unique bond people have with their animals.

Behind the Scenes
As with many of my shoots, there was plenty happening behind the camera too. From guiding Sophia through poses to keeping Trevor engaged, the process was every bit as collaborative as the images suggest. To give a better sense of how it all came together, I filmed a short behind-the-scenes video on the day. You can watch it here: BTS – Portrait Photography with Sophia and Trevor. The video captures the relaxed, fun atmosphere we had on the shoot, along with some of the moments that shaped the final photographs. It’s always rewarding to look back at these glimpses, as they show the real experience behind the finished images.
Closing Thoughts
Working with Sophia and Trevor was a wonderful experience. The images reflect the trust between them, but also the relaxed and joyful atmosphere of the shoot itself. For me, that’s the essence of good portrait photography: it’s not just about the final picture, it’s about capturing the feeling of the day.
