A Head Shot

This is the first thing you’ll need when you start putting a modelling résumé together.
Simple snapshots are all you need at first, enough for an agent or client to see whether they’re interested. I can produce a series of headshots in a single session that shows your photographic qualities.
If an agency likes what they see, they may ask you to put together a ‘book’ of photographs showing your versatility. That’s when you might consider the shots below.
A Beauty Shot

Many agencies like to see a beauty shot: a colour photograph of your face, usually from the shoulders up. It’s meant to show you at your absolute best, and it’s normally taken without make-up or accessories. This is one of my specialities.
Full-Length Body Shot

This one is full length and shows your size and proportions. Wear simple, well-fitting clothing; a t-shirt and jeans always photograph well.
A Swimsuit Shot

I’d only include this if you feel completely comfortable with it. You need to be over 16 for me to photograph you in a swimsuit, and if you’re under 18 you’ll need a chaperone.
Fashion Shot

This can be more relaxed and fun, with movement and creativity. It’s also a good place for a smiling shot, so agents can see what they’d be working with. A smiling shot is essential whatever kind of modelling career you’re pursuing.
Commercial Shot

If this is the area you want to work in, these shots should show the range of emotion you can convey, from laughing and having fun to miserable, upset or angry. Think of it as acting, but in print.
Final Shot

It’s worth ending your portfolio on one of your strongest images. A good option is one of your best beauty or head shots that’s slightly different from the ones you’ve already used. Alternatively, I can set up a session specifically for that final photograph.
A Model’s Book Is Always Evolving
A modelling book is your chance to show your individuality and give a potential agent a sense of your style and where you want to take your career. If you can do that with three or four outstanding shots rather than several average ones, all the better.
Variety is key. Work with a number of different photographers who use distinct techniques, so you can pull together a creative, individual book. Experiencing different styles also builds your confidence in front of the camera, and that ultimately shows in the finished shot.
